19th Asian Games (of 2022, held in 2023)
The 19th Asian Games (of 2022, held in 2023) were held in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 08, 2023.
Earlier, the Games were scheduled to be held from September 10 to 25, 2022, but were postponed due to the rising COVID-19 pandemic cases in China.
- The Hangzhou Asian Games marks the third time that China has hosted the Asiad, following Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010.
- The opening and closing ceremony were held at Hangzhou Sports Park Stadium in Hangzhou, China.
- More than 12,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions competed in 40 sports, 61 disciplines, and 481 events, the 19th Asian Games were the largest in history.
Theme of the 19th Asian Games:
Motto:
» “Heart to Heart, @Future” is the slogan for the Games.
- The unique nature of this slogan is in keeping with Hangzhou’s status as a city of Internet. The official motto of the Asian Games 2022, “Heart to Heart, @Future” was announced on 15 December 2019.
Emblem:
» “Tides Surging” is the official name of the Emblem. It represents the Qiantang River in Hangzhou, one of the three largest river tidal bores in the world.
Mascot:
» The three mascots of Asian Games 2022 are Congcong, Chenchen, and Lianlian.
- They represent the three World Heritage Sites that are located in Hangzhou – the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal, and the West Lake, respectively.
- The three mascots of the Games are collectively known as “Memories of Jiangnan”.
Music
» The games’ official theme song, “With You and Me”, was released on April 27, 2023.
Torch relay:
» The final torch design of the 2022 Asian Games called the “Eternal Flame” was unveiled on 10 September 2021.
Medals:
» The medal design of the 19th Asian Games, “Shan Shui”, was released on 15 June 2023.
- Its design was inspired by Jade Cong in the Liangzhu Culture. The obverse featured the Games edition logo, misty hills, the city, a rippling lake and undulating mountains, while the reverse featured the Asian Games Sun Emblem and the name of the event in Chinese and English.
- Medal winners were also presented bouquets named “Fruits of Triumph”. It consisted of five flowers – rice ears, lotus seedpods, moth orchids (Phalaenopsis), Longjing tea branches and sweet osmanthus branches, arranged in a vase inspired by a huagu.
19th Asian Games: Introduction of New Sports
- Two medal sports ‘e-Sports’ and ‘Breakdancing’ were introduced in the Asian Games 2022.
- Cricket, and board games – Go, Xiangqi, and Chess returned at the 19th Asian Games after not being included in the 2018 Asian Games.
19th Asian Games: Medal Table- Top Four
- China dominated the medal tally with 383 medals (201 gold, silver 111 and bronze 71), ahead of Japan (188 medals, 52 gold, silver 67 and bronze 69) and the Republic of Korea (190 medals, 42 gold, silver 59 and bronze 89).
- India finished fourth in the medal table with 107 medals.
19th Asian Games: Performance of India
Indian contingent:
» India sent 655 athletes to compete in 41 disciplines at the Asian Games 2023.
Indian flag bearer:
- Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain and men’s hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh were the Indian flag bearers during the opening ceremony of the Asian Games 2023.
- Men’s hockey team goalkeeper PR Sreejesh was the Indian flag bearer during the closing ceremony.
Indian Medal Winners:
» India won a total of 107 medals (28 gold, 38 silver, and 41 bronze) in the Asian Games 2022. This is India’s best performance in the Asian Games in terms of total number of medals won.
- India won its first Asian Games badminton gold medal courtesy the men’s doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy.
- Women’s T-20 cricket and Men’s team also won gold medals in cricket events.
- Hockey men’s team and hockey women’s team won gold and bronze medals respectively.
19th Asian Games: World record set by Indians
- Sift Kaur Samra set a world record in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions final (469.6 points).
- Rudrankksh Patil, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Divyansh Singh set a world record in the men’s 10m air rifle team (1893.7 points).
- Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Swapnil Kusale and Akhil Sheoran set a world record in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions team (1769 points).

History of India’s participation in the Asian Games:
- In the year 1949, the Asian Games Federation was inaugurated in New Delhi where the first Asian Games were held in 1951.
- In 1981, the Asian Games Federation was renamed as the Olympic Council of Asia to strengthen its association with the International Olympic Committee, relocating its base from India to Kuwait where it currently resides.
- The ninth edition of the Asian Games was held again in New Delhi in November and December 1982.
- India has won 779 medals at the Asian Games since the inaugural edition in 1951.
- India achieved its highest medal count at the Asian Games in 2023, held in China.
- The previous record was achieved by India in the last edition in Jakarta 2018, where the 570-strong Indian team had won 70 medals – 16 gold, 23 silver and 31 bronze.
Next Asian Games:
- The next and 20th Games in 2026 will be held in Japan in Aichi-Nagoya (19 September – 4 October) followed by a Middle Eastern swing through Doha in 2030 and Riyadh in 2034.
