Chief Minister of Bihar

⇒ After Bihar political crisis, Janata Dal (United) or JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar took oath as Bihar’s Chief Minister for the eighth time on 10 August 2022.

Prior to this Kumar took oath as the CM in March 2000, November 2005, November 2010, February 2015, November 2015, July 2017 and November 2020.

    • During the swearing ceremony, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav as deputy CM was the only other minister sworn in by Governor Phagu Chauhan.

Weapon of Mass Destruction and their Delivery Systems (Prohibition of Unlawful Activities) Amendment Bill 2022

⇒ Parliament has passed the Weapon of Mass Destruction and their Delivery Systems (Prohibition of Unlawful Activities) Amendment Bill 2022, with the Rajya Sabha approving it on 01 August 2022.

» The Bill seeks to amend the Weapons of Mass Destruction and their Delivery Systems (Prohibition of Unlawful Activities) Act, 2005.

    • The 2005 Act prohibits unlawful activities such as manufacturing, transport or transfer related to weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery.
    • Weapons of mass destruction are biological, chemical or nuclear weapons.
    • The Bill bars persons from financing any prohibited activity related to weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems.
» The Weapons of Mass Destruction and their Delivery Systems (Prohibition of Unlawful Activities) Amendment Bill, 2022, inter alia, seeks to —

(a) prohibit financing of any activity in relation to weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems;

(b) empower the Central Government to—

        1. freeze, seize or attach funds or other financial assets or economic resources for preventing such financing;
        2. prohibit making available funds, financial assets or economic resources for any prohibited activity in relation to weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems.

Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill, 2022

⇒ The Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill, 2022 was proposed in the Lok Sabha on 3 August 2022.

    • The Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill 2022 a bill further to amend the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.

The Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill 2022 seeks to enable India to reach its climate targets under the Paris Climate Agreement before 2030. The bill aimed at ensuring greater use of renewable energy and enforcing penalties on industrial polluters for carbon emissions.

Vice-Presidential Election of India 2022

» Vice-Presidential Election of India 2022 was the 16th Vice-Presidential election to elect the 14th Vice-President of India.

    • Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar took over as the 14th Vice President of India and Chairman of Rajya Sabha on 11 August 2022.

A renowned lawyer and former West Bengal Governor, Shri Dhankhar, was administered the oath of office by the President, Smt Droupadi Murmu at a swearing-in ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 11 August. Read More

Russian rocket successfully launches an Iranian satellite

⇒ A Russian rocket successfully launched an Iranian satellite into orbit on 09 August 2022.

The Soyuz rocket lifted off from the Russia-leased Baikonur launch facility in Kazakhstan. About nine minutes after the launch, it placed the Iranian satellite called Khayyam into orbit.

About satellite:
    • It’s named after Omar Khayyam, a Persian scientist who lived in the 11th and 12th centuries.
    • The satellite fitted with high-resolution camera will be used for environmental monitoring.
    • If it operates successfully, the satellite would give Iran the ability to monitor its archenemy Israel and other countries in the Middle East.

AIFF Player of the Year Award winners for 2021-22

⇒ Indian football team talisman Sunil Chhetri was named the AIFF Men’s Footballer of the Year for 2021-22 on 09 August 2022. While Manisha Kalyan was conferred the AIFF Women’s Footballer of the Year 2021-22 award by the All India Football Federation.

Started in 1992, the winners of the AIFF Player of the Year Awards were nominated by Igor Stimac and Thomas Dennerby, the Indian men’s and women’s national team coaches, respectively.

» Vikram Pratap Singh and Martina Thokchom were named the 2021-22 Men’s and Women’s Emerging Footballer of the Year, respectively.

Key Points:
    • India defender Sandesh Jhingan had won the All India Football Federation honour for the 2020-21 season.
    • This was Sunil Chhetri’s record seventh AIFF Men’s Footballer of the Year award, having won it previously in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2018–19. No other player has won it more times than the 38-year-old veteran.
    • Manisha Kalyan, who won the 2021-22 AIFF Women’s Footballer of the Year, was the recipient of the Women’s Emerging Footballer of the Year from last season.
