The theme for the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2021 is “Access to Justice”. This year’s theme serves as a reminder of the importance to fully address the needs of older persons who may seek recourse.

Mistreatment of the elderly is one of the world’s least addressed issues. This is the day when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations.

The day was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 66/127, in December 2011, following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA), who first established the commemoration in June 2006.
