Durand Cup 2023

The Durand Cup 2023, a football tournament, was played in Kolkata, Guwahati and Kokrajhar from 3 August to 3 September 2023.

  • It was the 132nd edition of the Durand Cup. This was the second edition since it was supported by the Asian Football Confederation.
  • Started in 1888, the Durand Cup is the oldest football competition in India and Asia. It’s also the third-oldest in the world.
Participation:
  • This edition of the Durand Cup featured 24 teams, up from 20 in the previous edition, which included all 12 Indian Super League (ISL) teams.
  • Services teams from neighboring foreign countries Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal also participated in this legacy tournament, marking foreign participation in this great tournament after a long gap of 27 years.

The tournament is hosted by the Durand Football Tournament Society in co-operation with the AIFF, Eastern Command of the Indian Armed Forces and the Government of West Bengal, supported by the Government of Assam.

The Durand Cup 2023 Football Final was played between Indian Super League (ISL) rivals Mohun Bagan and East Bengal on September 3, 2023 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium), Kolkata.

  • Kolkata club Mohun Bagan Super Giant won its 17th Durand Cup title by defeating arch-rivals East Bengal FC 1-0.

  • Golden Glove award: Vishal Kaith (Mohun Bagan)
  • Golden Boot award: David Lalhlansanga (Mohammedan SC)
  • Golden Ball award: Nandhakumar Sekar (East Bengal FC)

About Durand Cup:

  • The Durand Cup is an annual domestic football competition in India which was first held in 1888 in Shimla.
  • The tournament is named after its founder Sir Henry Mortimer Durand, the foreign secretary of India from 1884 to 1894.
  • The winner of the tournament is presented with three trophies, Durand Cup, Shimla Trophy, President’s Cup.
  • The three Trophies unique to the tournament are, the Durand Cup (a rolling trophy and the original prize), the Shimla Trophy (also a rolling trophy and first given by the residents of Shimla in 1904) and the President’s Cup (first presented by Dr Rajendra Prasad in 1956).
