4th Asian Para Games 2022

4th Asian Para Games (of 2022, held in 2023)

The 4th Asian Para Games (of 2022, held in 2023) were held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China from 22 to 28 October 2023. The Asian Para Games is a multi-sport event held for Asian athletes with disabilities.

Earlier, the Games were scheduled to be held from October 9 to 15, 2022, but were postponed due to the rising COVID-19 pandemic cases in China.

  • The Hangzhou Asian Para Games marks the second time that China has hosted the Para Asiad, following Guangzhou in 2010.
  • 3,021 athletes from 44 countries participated in the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games. During the nine days of competition, 566 events were held at the Hangzhou Sports Park Stadium in Hangzhou.
Next Asian Para games:

» The next Asian Para games are scheduled to be held in Nagoya, Japan, between October 14 and October 22, 2026.

Theme of the 4th Asian Para Games:
Motto:

» “Hearts meet, Dreams shine” was the slogan for the Games.

The official motto of the Asian Para Games 2022, “Hearts meet, Dreams shine” was announced on 2 March 2020. It symbolises connectivity between the countries of Asia.

Emblem:

» “Ever Forward” is the official name of the Emblem.

It features a wheelchair athlete striving forward on a running track with 10 semi-arc lines and resembling surging Qiantang River tides. It reflects “the sublime heroism of the para-athletes in persevering and challenging themselves”.

Mascot:

» The Games’ mascot, “Fei Fei”, unveiled online on April 16, 2020, draws inspiration from the divine bird in Liangzhu culture.

It symbolizes local legends of happiness. “Fei,” her first “fly,” represents the flight of a bird, signifying a spirit of tolerance, respect, and friendship in society. The second “fly” signifies the determination of disabled athletes who are pursuing their dreams.

Medals:

» The medal design of the 4th Asian Para Games, “Osmanthus Grace”, was released on 14 July 2023.

    • Its name was derived from a Tang lyric poem composed by the poet-governor of Hangzhou a thousand years ago, one line of which goes, “Around mountain temples, I search for osmanthus blooms falling from the moon”.
    • The medal design was a combination of two different Jades: round green Bi and yellow square Cong in the Liangzhu culture, respectively associated with heaven and earth.
    • The obverse featured the Games edition logo encircled by Sweet Osmanthus flowers – city flower of Hangzhou, while the reverse featured the Asian Paralympic Council Emblem surrounded by braille letters and the name of the event in Chinese and English.

History of Asian Para Games:
  • Before the inception of the Asian Para Games, there was the FESPIC Games, which included athletes from the Asia Pacific region. The FESPIC Games debuted in 1975 in Oita, Japan, with the participation of 18 nations. Over the years, eight more editions of the FESPIC Games were held until 2006.
  • The Asian Para Games superseded the FESPIC Games, leading to the dissolution of the FESPIC Federation, which governed these games. It merged with the Asian Paralympic Council, which was subsequently renamed the Asian Paralympic Committee. This significant transition occurred following the final edition of the FESPIC Games held in November 2006 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
  • The inaugural Asian Para Games occurred in 2010 in Guangzhou, China, marking the first multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities in the Asian region.
