Prof CR Rao Centenary Gold Medal

⇒ Renowned economist Jagdish Bhagwati and C Rangarajan have been conferred with the inaugural ‘Prof CR Rao Centenary Gold Medal (CGM)’ on 02 August 2021.

About Winners:

Jagdish Bhagwati is professor of economics, law and international relations at Columbia University and director of the Raj Center on Indian Economic Policies.

C Rangarajan is the former chairman of the Economic Advisory Council of the Prime Minister and former governor of the Reserve Bank of India.

About Award:

The award is given to an Indian or scholar of Indian-origin for her or his lifetime contributions to the fields of theoretical and applied aspects of quantitative economics, and official statistics.

The Indian Econometric Society (TIES) Trust has instituted the award to commemorate the contributions of its professor CR Rao to the quantitative economic theory and practice and also the TIES over the last several decades. The award will be presented once in two years.

‘Pani Maah’ Campaign in Ladakh

⇒ The Union Territory of Ladakh launched a month-long campaign- ‘Pani Maah’ (Water Month) to increase the pace of implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in the UT and to inform and engage village communities on the importance of clean water.

Period:

The ‘Pani Maah’ campaign was carried out in two phases at the Block and Panchayat level. The first phase was completed from 1st to 14th August and the second phase was from 16th to 30th August, 2021.

Focus:

The campaign adopted a three-pronged approach- focused on water quality testing, planning and strategizing water supply, and seamless functioning of Pani Sabha in villages.

In the first phase of ‘Pani Maah’:

» The first phase of campaign was focused on Swachhta Sarvekshan and Sanitation drives by Village Water and Sanitation Committee (VWSC)/ Pani Samiti members.

» The first phase also included awareness and sensitisation campaigns.

Phase two of ‘Pani Maah’:

» The second phase of the campaign was focused on organizing the Pani Sabhas/ Gram Sabhas/ Block level meetings and door to door visits for effective communication on water quality and service delivery under JJM.

» During this phase, Jal Jeevan Mission implementation, water quality test reports and analysis was discussed with the villagers in an open forum.

Former Australian Prime Minister The Hon Tony Abbott visited India

⇒ The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi met with the former Australian Prime Minister The Hon Tony Abbott on 05 August. Mr Tony Abbott visited India from 2-6 August 2021 in his capacity of Australian Prime Minister’s Special Trade Envoy for India.

The two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral trade, investment and economic cooperation to realize the full potential of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

They emphasized that enhanced economic cooperation between India and Australia would help both countries better address the economic challenges emerging out of the COVID-19 pandemic, and would also help them in realising their shared vision of a stable, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs also called on Mr Tony Abbott:

Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs Smt Nirmala Sitharaman also met Mr Tony Abbott, Special Envoy of Australian Prime Minister and discussed on various issues of mutual interest.

The Finance Minister emphasised that the complementarities between both countries provide immense scope for augmenting the economic relationships.

Smt Sitharaman further highlighted those recent economic reforms and easing of FDI norms in India provide opportunities for Australian investors. The Australian Superannuation funds have invested in National Investment & Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) and have been invited to look at various opportunities to invest in Indian infrastructure.

The Finance Minister offered that a team from Australia could engage with the Indian side to better explore the avenues for investment in National Infrastructure Pipeline projects.

ICORT-2021

⇒ The 2nd Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Conference on Range Technology (ICORT-2021) was held virtually on August 05, 2021.

Organized By:

The conference was organised by Integrated Test Range (ITR) Chandipur, a laboratory of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Inauguration:

The conference was inaugurated by Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO Dr G Satheesh Reddy.
In his address, Dr G Satheesh Reddy highlighted the importance of embracing recent developments in Range Technology to meet the future challenges in Test and Evaluation.

Participants:

The event hosted speakers from across the globe. During the event, speakers presented their technological achievements in multiple subjects related to Test and Evaluation of defence systems.

Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2021

⇒ The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2021 was held virtually on 20 August 2021. It was the 12th edition of the ‘Indian Film Festival of Melbourne’ (IFFM).

Tamil actor Suriya won the Best Performance Male for Soorarai Pottru, and Vidya Balan grabbed Best Performance Female for Sherni.

Noted author and first modern woman poetess of Dogri language, Padma Sachdev

⇒ Noted author and first modern woman poetess of Dogri language, Padma Sachdev passed away on 04 August 2021 in Mumbai. She was 81.

Sachdev authored many books in Dogri and Hindi. Her poetry collections, including ‘Meri Kavita Mere Geet’, won her the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1971.

Sachdev was awarded the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian honour, in 2001. She was also awarded the Kabir Samman for poetry for 2007-08 by the Madhya Pradesh government.

Sachdev wrote the lyrics for the song ‘Mera Chhota Sa Ghar Baar’ from the 1973 Hindi film Prem Parbat. She also penned the lyrics for two songs for the 1978 Hindi film Aankhin Dekhi.
