8th instalment of financial benefit to farmers under PM-KISAN

⇒ Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi released 8th instalment of financial benefit of Rs 2,06,67,75,66,000 to 9,50,67,601 beneficiary farmers under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme on 14 May 2021.

During the event, PM said, for the first time, the farmers of West Bengal would be getting the benefit of this scheme.

NAIMISHA 2021

⇒ The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi is creating a virtual museum space through its online summer programme NAIMISHA 2021. The programme is being held during 17th May to 13th June 2021.

This unique art fiesta is providing a platform to create and engage with the arts.

The online summer Workshops- NAIMISHA has been designed on painting, sculpture, print making and videography and puppeteering and other related arts.

International

Goa Maritime Symposium (GMS) 2021

⇒ Indian Navy hosted GOA MARITIME SYMPOSIUM (GMS) 2021 under the aegis of Naval War College, Goa on 11 and 12 May, 2021, to fostering friendly relations with its maritime neighbours.

Participated Countries:

In the online ‘GMS 21’ Naval representatives from 13 Indian Ocean Littoral countries was participated, which included India, Bangladesh, Comoros, Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Theme:

The theme for GMS-21 was focused on “Maritime Security and Emerging Non-Traditional Threats: A Case for Proactive Role for IOR Navies,” with emphasis on capacity building amongst the IOR Navies to tackle emerging common maritime threats.

First Indian fencer to qualified for the Olympic Games

⇒ 27-year-old Sabre Fencer Bhavani Devi from Chennai became the first Indian fencer to qualify for the Olympic Games. She is looking forward to giving off her best performance in Tokyo 2020.

2021 Serbia Open Tennis Tournament

⇒ The 2021 Serbia Open tennis tournament was held in Belgrade, Serbia from 18 April to 22 May, 2021. This was the 5th and 1st edition of tournament for male and female tennis players, respectively.

The 2021 ATP 250 Tour for men’s was held from 19-25 April, 2021. Also, the 2021 WTA 250 Tour for women’s was held from 16-22 May, 2021.

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2021

⇒ World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is celebrated globally on 8 May each year to celebrate the principles, values, history and impact of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Theme:

The theme for the World Red Cross Day 2021 was- Together we are #unstoppable!

About founder of the ICRC:

The World Red Cross day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Henry Dunant. He was born on 8th May, 1828 in Geneva and the recipient of first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.

Death

Veteran Music Composer, Vanraj Bhatia

⇒ Veteran music composer, Vanraj Bhatia died in Mumbai on 07 May 2021. He was 94.

Mr Bhatia had scored the music for Shyam Benegal classics like Ankur and Bhumika and TV series Yatra and Bharat Ek Khoj (Discovery of India).

He was conferred with the India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, the Padma Shri in 2012. He won the National Award for Best Music for Govind Nihalani”s TV series Tamas. He had also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

Malayalam screenwriter and director, Dennis Joseph

⇒ Legendary Malayalam screenwriter and director, Dennis Joseph passed away on 10 May 2021 in Kottayam.

Dennis Joseph directed five films, including Manu Uncle. In 1988, he had won the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film for this film.

He had written several films, including Bhoomiyile Rajakkanmar, Kanyakumari Express, Geethanjali, Thomson Villa etc.
