National Institutes of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management Bill, 2021

⇒ Parliament has passed the National Institutes of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management Bill, 2021. The Bill was unanimously passed by the Loksabha on 26 July 2021. It was earlier cleared by the Rajya Sabha on 15 March 2021.

Union Minister for Food Processing Industries Shri Pashupati Kumar Paras said, with the passing of this bill, our two educational institutes, National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) Kundali (Haryana) and Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT) Thanjabur (Tamil Nadu) under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries became Institutions of National Importance (INI).

The Minister said that these institutes will have curricular provision related to food processing areas such as cold chain technology, food bio nanotechnology which can help in filling the technological gap.

He also said, now they can open new centres anywhere in the country and abroad. Along with this, giving them the status of Institute of National Importance (INI) will also pave the way for the creation of skilled manpower.

IGBC Platinum Rating to KASEZ

⇒ Kandla Special Economic Zone (KASEZ) was awarded IGBC Platinum Rating on 26 July 2021. Kandla SEZ is the First Green SEZ to achieve the IGBC Green Cities Platinum Rating for Existing Cities.

IGBC Platinum rating has been awarded for ‘Green master planning, policy initiatives and implementation of green infrastructure’ by CII’s Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).

First-of-its-kind “Centre of Excellence” in the Northeast

⇒ The Ministry of Science & Technology is to set up a first-of-its-kind “Centre of Excellence” in the Northeast.

The prestigious project for establishing “Centre for Bio-Resources and Sustainable Development as a Centre of Excellence” was sanctioned by the Department of Biotechnology.

The exact location of the project is at Kimin in Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh.

National Commission for Women’s 24/7 helpline number

⇒ The Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Smt Smriti Zubin Irani on 27 July 2021 inaugurated the National Commission for Women’s 24/7 helpline number – 7827170170.

Any girl or woman aged 18 years and above can seek help by calling on this Helpline which will be operated from the premises of the National Commission for Women, New Delhi.

In order to strengthen and expand the complaint platform, the Commission took the initiative to start this Digital Helpline. This helpline service has been developed in collaboration with Digital India Corporation, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Objective:

The helpline aims to provide 24/7 online support to women affected by violence through a Single Uniform number.

The objective of the Helpline is to provide 24-hour complaints and counseling services to women affected by violence by linking them with appropriate authorities such as police, hospitals, District Legal Service Authority psychological services and providing information about women related government programmes across the country.

International

Exercise Cutlass Express 2021

⇒ Indian Naval Ship Talwar participated in Exercise Cutlass Express 2021. The exercise was conducted from 26 July 2021 to 06 August 2021 along the East Coast of Africa. Indian Navy participated in the exercise in a ‘trainer role’. As part of the exercise, the ship visited Mombasa, Kenya.

The exercise is an annual maritime exercise conducted to promote national and regional maritime security in East Africa and the Western Indian Ocean.

Participants:

The 2021 edition of the exercise involved participation of 12 Eastern African countries, US, UK, India and various international organizations like- International Maritime Organisation, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Interpol, EurEuropean Union Naval Forc, Critical Maritime Routes Indian Ocean and EUCAP Somalia.

Focus:

The exercise focused on East Africa’s coastal regions and was designed to assess and improve combined maritime law enforcement capacity, promote national and regional security and increase interoperability between the regional navies.

Indian Navy as Trainer:

As part of the exercise, the Indian Navy, together with other partners, trained contingents from various participating countries in various fields across the spectrum of maritime security operations.

Information sharing and information flow between various partner countries with respect to maritime domain awareness was also a key focus of the exercise and participation of India’s Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) contributed in achieving the same.

World Cadet Championship 2021

⇒ The World Cadet Championship 2021 was held from 19 July to 25 July, 2021 at Budapest, Hungary.

The Cadet World Championship is a yearly event organized by United World Wrestling. The World Championships is held under Freestyle, Greco-Roman and Women category.

India won 13 medals, including 5 Gold, 1 Silver and 7 Bronze at the World Championships.

Kargil Vijay Diwas

⇒ 26th July every year is celebrated as ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’ across the Nation as a mark of remembrance for those who fought bravely at the icy heights with valour, defeating the enemy.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated to commemorate the Indian Armed Forces victory over Pakistan in 1999.
