Launch of 'ANJADIP' Third Ship of ASW SWC (GRSE)

⇒ ‘Anjadip’, the 3rd of eight ships of ASW Shallow Water Craft (SWC) Project being built by M/s GRSE for Indian Navy, was launched on 13 June 2023 at M/s L&T, Kattupalli.

The Launch Ceremony was presided over by VAdm R B Pandit, C-in-C (SFC). On completion of the event VAdm R B Pandit also laid the keel for the 7th ASW SWC ship.

Ship Name:

The ship has been named Anjadip to signify the strategic maritime importance accorded to the island of Anjadip, located off Karwar. The island is connected to the mainland by a breakwater and is part of INS Kadamba.

Background:
    • The contract for building eight ASW SWC ships was signed between MoD and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata on 29 April 2019.
    • As per the build strategy, four ships are being built at GRSE, Kolkata and construction of balance four ships has been sub-contracted to M/s L&T Shipbuilding, Kattupalli.
Other Points:
    • Arnala class of ships will replace the in-service Abhay class ASW Corvettes of Indian Navy and are designed to undertake anti-submarine operations in coastal waters, Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO), and Mine Laying operations including subsurface surveillance in littoral waters.
    • The 77 m long ASW SWC ships have a displacement of 900 tons with a maximum speed of 25 knots and endurance of 1800 NM.

G20 Education Ministers’ Meeting

⇒ The G20 Education Ministers’ meeting was held in Pune on June 22, 2023.

Chaired by:

The G20 Education Ministers’ Meeting (EMM) was chaired by Union Minister of Education, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan and was attended by over 150 delegates including 14 ministers from G20 members and Guest countries.

    • The high-level participation from the G20 and Guest countries underlined the global focus on education as a transformative pathway to achieve the Presidency’s goal of “One Earth, One Family, One Future”.
The EdWG track aligned emphasised 4 priority areas, namely,
    • Ensuring foundational literacy and numeracy, especially in the context of blended learning;
    • Making tech-enabled learning more inclusive, qualitative, and collaborative;
    • Building capacities and promoting lifelong learning in the context of the future of work; and
    • Strengthening research and fostering innovation through enhanced collaboration and partnerships. The Education Working Group also collaborates with employment and other Working groups to address issues like Skill Development, and school-to-work transition.

» These meetings were an opportunity to collectively agree on actions for accelerating achievement of the SDGs and foster synergies between the G20 nations towards the abovementioned priority areas.

» All the G20 members fully endorsed and adopted outcomes pertaining to the 4 priorities identified by the Indian Presidency for the Education Working Group, as all of them joined in consensus on all the technical issues and agreed to an “Outcome Document and Chair’s Summary”, which was adopted during the meeting.

» The G20 Ministers also unanimously adopted the G20 Education Working Group Report and the G20 Education Working Group Compendium on Education Policies and Programmes in G20 Countries.

The key takeaways of the G20 Educational Ministerial under India’s Presidency where all the G20 members agreed upon –
    1. Education’s critical role as an enabler of human dignity and empowerment globally.
    2. The need to work together for a resilient, equitable, inclusive, and sustainable future through education.
    3. The need to ensure that everyone irrespective of age, gender, socio-economic or cultural background or those who are facing physical, mental or other learning difficulties or special needs have access to quality, inclusive and equitable education, and training.
    4. Education is not only about academic learning but also about developing life, technical and vocational skills to make all learners future ready. They also underlined the need for lifelong learning.
    5. Recognized the important role of digital transformations, women-led development, green transition and education for sustainable development and lifestyles (LiFE) as accelerators that can advance the progress towards the achievement of the SDGs.
    6. The need for immediate and collective action to ensure that all learners acquire foundational learning, so that, by 2030, the percentage of children, particularly girls and children with disabilities, not able to read and understand a simple text and do simple maths is reduced substantially.
    7. The central role of all teachers and education staff all over the world in promoting education and the need to foster an environment including capacity building and exchange programmes that will enable teachers and staff to thrive in their profession.
    8. The importance of investment in supporting human capital development and encouraging collaborative solutions and innovations to promote quality teaching, learning and skilling as well as foster academic collaborations among educational institutions through joint programmes, dual degrees, as wells as student and faculty exchange programs.

During the discussions at the Ministerial Meeting:

All G20 members also reiterated their shared commitment to overcome the digital divide for all learners by addressing the barriers to technological infrastructure and working collectively to develop technology ecosystems and learning resources, including in local languages that are affordable and easily accessible.

Prior to the G20 Ministers’ Meeting, the Education Working Group held four meetings-
4th G20 Education Working Group Meeting:

» The 4th G20 Education Working Group (EdWG) was held in Pune from June 20 – 21, 2023.

    • About 80 delegates from G20 Members, invited countries, and international organisations (IOs) attended the EdWG Meeting.

Day 1:

    • The 4th and final Education Working Group meeting (EdWG) commenced to delegates to finalize outcome documents to be presented at the Education Ministers’ meeting on June 22, 2023.
    • On the first day, the G20 delegates-initiated deliberations focusing on drafting the outcome document with interventions by G20 Troika. The International Organisations (IOs) UNICEF, OECD, and UNESCO presented the education working group report.
    • The first day of the meeting came to a close after engaging sessions on drafting the outcome document for the WG.

Day 2:

    • On the second day of the meeting, G20 India delegates & dignitaries continued deliberations on drafting the outcome document.
    • Wrapping up discussions for the day, delegates reconvened along with Ministers from G20 and invitee nations at the Education Ministers’ Meeting in Pune on June 22.

Paris Diamond League 2023 Men’s Long Jump

⇒ Indian long jumper, Sreeshankar Murali won the bronze medal at the Diamond League in Paris, France on 10 June 2023.

    • Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar secured a creditable third place in the Paris Diamond League with a jump of 8.09m, his maiden top-three finishes in the prestigious one-day meeting series.
    • Sreeshankar is the first Indian to clinch a medal in the long jump event in the prestigious Diamond League.
    • Sreeshankar also became the only third Indian to finish in top-three of a Diamond League after Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and former discus thrower Vikas Gowda.

World Environment Day 2023

⇒ World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 05 June.

    • World Environment Day is an occasion which brings together millions of people across the globe for awareness and action for the environment.
    • World Environment Day highlights the protection and health of the environment is a major issue, which affects the well-being of peoples and economic development throughout the world.
    • The celebration of this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment.
World Environment Day 2023:

2023 marks the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day, after it was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972.

Theme:

The theme for World Environment Day 2023 was ‘solutions to plastic pollution’ under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution.

Host Country: Côte d’Ivoire

    • World Environment Day 2023 was hosted by Côte d’Ivoire in partnership with the Netherlands.
History:
    • The year 1972 marked a turning point in the development of international environmental politics, with the first major conference on environmental issues, known as the Conference on the Human Environment, or the Stockholm Conference.
    • Later that year, on 15 December, the General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/2994 (XXVII)) designating June 5 as World Environment Day.
Celebration in India:

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India organized the World Environment Day on 5th June 2023 with a thrust on the Mission LiFE.

    • The concept of LiFE, i.e., Lifestyle for Environment was introduced by The Prime Minister at the World Leaders’ Summit in Glasgow at COP26, when he gave a clarion call to rekindle a global pursuit to adopt environment friendly lifestyles and practices.
    • As a part of Mission LiFE, a comprehensive and non-exhaustive list of 75 individual LiFE actions have been identified across 7 themes – save water, save energy, reduce waste, reduce e-waste, reduce single-use plastics, adopt sustainable food systems, and adopt healthy lifestyles.

» The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is “Solutions to Plastic Pollution”, a topic which aligns with one of the 7 themes of Mission LiFE: “Saying No to Single-use Plastics”. It is also linked to implementation of a number of LiFE actions.
