Theatre Level Operational Readiness Exercise (TROPEX-23): Indian Navy’s Largest War Game

⇒ TROPEX (TROPEX-23), the Indian Navy’s major Operational level exercise for the year 2023, was conducted across the expanse of Indian Ocean Region (IOR) over a duration of four months from November 2022 to March 2023.

    • Indian Navy’s major maritime exercise TROPEX 23 culminated in the Arabian Sea in the second week of March 2023.

» TROPEX is an inter-service military exercise which started in 2005, the exercise was conducted annually till 2015. Held biennially since 2015.

    • This operational level exercise is conducted biennially and witnesses’ participation not only by all Indian Navy units but also of Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Coast Guard assets.
Key Points:
    • As part of the exercise, all surface combatants of the Indian Navy including Destroyers, Frigates, Corvettes as well as submarines and aircraft were put through complex maritime operational deployments to validate and refine the Navy’s Concept of Operations including operational logistics and interoperability with other Services.
    • The exercise was conducted in different phases, both in harbour and at sea, encompassing various facets of combat operations, including live weapon firings.
    • The overall exercise construct included Coastal Defence exercise Sea Vigil and the Amphibious Exercise AMPHEX. Together, these exercises also witnessed significant participation from the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force and the Coast Guard.
    • Set in the Indian Ocean including the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, the theatre of operations for the exercise extended approximately 4300nm from North to South upto 35deg South Latitude and 5000nm from Persian Gulf in the West to North Australia coast in the East. The whole area was spanning an area of over 21 million square nautical miles.
    • TROPEX 23 witnessed participation of approximately 70 Indian Navy ships, six submarines and over 75 aircraft.
» As part of the final Joint Phase, the Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh spent a day at sea onboard the newly commissioned Indigenous Aircraft Carrier Vikrant on 06 March 2023.
    • He reviewed the Indian Navy’s operational preparedness and material readiness wherein the Navy demonstrated operational manoeuvers and various facets of combat operations, including deck operations of indigenous LCA and live weapon firings.

» The maritime exercise also facilitates operational level interaction with the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and the Coast Guard, which further strengthens interoperability and joint operations in a complex environment.

Winners for 'Water Heroes Share Your Stories Contest’ for The Month of November 2022

⇒ The Ministry of Jal Shakti announced the winners for ‘Water Heroes Share Your Stories Contest’ for the month of November 2022 in January 2023.

‘Water Heroes: Share Your Stories’ contest:

The Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti has launched the ‘Water Heroes: Share Your Stories’ contest.

    • Till date, three editions of the contest have been launched on MyGov portal. The 3rd edition has been launched on 01 December 2021 and ends on 30 November 2022.
Objective:

The objective of the contest is to promote value of water, in general, and for supporting country-wide efforts on water conservation and sustainable development of water resources.

    • The aim is to create awareness for water conservation by enhancing knowledge and sharing experiences of water heroes; and to create an attitude towards water conservation and management so that a behavioral change can be created amongst all stakeholders.

» During 2020-22, about 762 Chal-khals or water ponds with total rainwater retention capacity of more than 16 million of rainwater have been constructed.

For the month of November 2022, the three winners are:
    1. Shri Bapu Bahusaheb Salunkhe (Nashik, Maharashtra)
    2. Ms. Gungun Chaudhary
    3. Shri Vaibhav Singh, IFoS (Indian Forest Service Officer)

» The winner is given a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and a certificate.

Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards – 2022

⇒ The President of India has approved the conferment of Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards – 2022 on 43 persons which includes Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 07, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 08 and Jeevan Raksha Padak to 28 persons.

About Award:
    • Jeevan Raksha Padak series of awards are given to a person for meritorious act of human nature in saving the life of a person.
    • The award is given in three categories, namely, Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak and Jeevan Raksha Padak. Persons of all walks of life are eligible for these awards.
    • The award can also be conferred posthumously.

Police Medal for Gallantry, President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and Police Medal for Meritorious Service

⇒ A total of 901 Police personnels have been awarded Police Medals on the occasion of the Republic Day, 2023.

» Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG) has been awarded to 140, President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPM) to 93 and Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PM) has been awarded to 668.

    • Among the majority of the 140 Gallantry Awards, 80 personnel from Left Wing Extremism affected areas and 45 personnel from Jammu & Kashmir region are being awarded for their gallant action.
    • Among the personnel receiving Gallantry Awards, 48 are from CRPF, 31 are from Maharashtra, 25 are from J&K Police, 09 are from Jharkhand, 07 are each from Delhi, Chhattisgarh & BSF and the remaining from the other States/UTs and CAPFs.

About Police Medal for Gallantry:
    • Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG) is awarded on the ground of Conspicuous Gallantry in saving life and property, or in preventing crime or arresting criminals.
    • President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPM) is awarded for special distinguished record in Police Service and Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PM) is awarded for valuable service characterized by resource and devotion to duty.

11 Crore Rural Households in India now have access to tap Water Connection

⇒ Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi praised the achievement of 11 Crore Tap water connections under Jal Jeevan Mission on 25 January 2023.

Key Points:
    • At the time of the launch of the Mission in 2019, out of 19.35 Crore rural households, only 3.23 Crore (16.72%) had access to tap water.
    • As on date, within a short span of about three years of the life changing mission, over 11 Crore (56.84%) rural households have tap water supply in their homes.
    • 123 districts and more than 1.53 lakh villages of India have reported ‘Har Ghar Jal’ which means every household has access to clean drinking water through tap.
    • Over 17 lakh women trained for testing water quality using Field Test Kits.
    • So far, over 5.20 lakh Pani Samitis formed under JJM to manage, operate and maintain in-village water supply infrastructure.

53rd Statehood Day of Himachal Pradesh

⇒ Himachal Pradesh celebrated its 53rd Statehood Day on January 25, 2023 with full enthusiasm across the state.

    • On this day in the year 1971, Himachal was carved out as an 18th state and got full statehood.
