Book Titled ‘Reflecting, Recollecting, Reconnecting’

⇒ The Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Anurag Thakur presented the first copy of the book titled ‘Reflecting, Recollecting, Reconnecting’ to the Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu.

The book, brought out by the Publications Division of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, chronicles the Vice President’s fourth year in office.

The 183-page book captures the salient aspects of the Vice President’s activities during the 4th year in pictures, vignettes and words in five chapters.

36th Governor of Punjab

⇒ The President of India has appointed Shri Banwarilal Purohit, as the Governor of Punjab.

Banwarilal Purohit was sworn in as the 36th Governor of Punjab on 31 August 2021. The Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Ravi Shanker Jha, administered the oath of office to Purohit at Punjab Raj Bhawan.

The President of India has also appointed Shri Banwarilal Purohit as the Administrator of Union Territory of Chandigarh, in addition to his duties as Governor of Punjab.

Executive Director of RBI

⇒ The Reserve Bank of India has appointed Shri Ajay Kumar as Executive Director (ED) with effect from August 20, 2021.

As Executive Director, Shri Kumar will look after Department of Currency Management, Foreign Exchange Department and Premises Department.

e-Photo exhibition "Making of the Constitution"

⇒ Recently, the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, and Youth Affairs & Sports, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Development of North Eastern Region of India, Shri G Kishan Reddy inaugurated e-Photo exhibition “Making of the Constitution”.

He also inaugurated the Virtual Film Poster Exhibition “Chitranjali@75”.

The event was organized as part of ‘Iconic Week’ being celebrated by Ministry of Information & Broadcasting along with various media units to celebrate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Objective:

The objective of the event was to showcase the journey of New India and celebrate the contribution of freedom fighters including the ‘Unsung Heroes’ of the freedom struggle through massive outreach activities.

Speaking at the event, Shri Anurag Thakur announced that very soon the Government will run a ‘Know Your Constitution’ programme in every district to encourage our youth to partner in the efforts to propagate the founding principles of our Constitution.

International

Chairperson of Stop TB Partnership Board

⇒ Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Shri Mansukh Mandaviya took over charge as the Chairperson of Stop TB Partnership Board on 26 August 2021. The minister assumed the responsibility till 2024 with immediate effect.

He will lead the efforts of the Stop TB Partnership Secretariat, partners, and the TB community at large, towards reaching the UN TB targets by 2022, a milestone moment in the effort to end TB by 2030.

World’s Largest and Tallest Observation Wheel

⇒ The world’s largest and tallest observation wheel ‘Ain Dubai’ (Dubai Eye) is located at Bluewaters Island. The Observation Wheel will open to the public on 21 October 2021 in the UAE.

Ain Dubai is the latest landmark to join Dubai’s long list of world record-breaking attractions.

At nearly twice the height of the London Eye, Ain Dubai will take visitors to a height of 250 metres from where they could enjoy a majestic view of Dubai’s picturesque skyline.

United Nations banned British Stamps from the Chagos Islands in Indian Ocean

⇒ Recently, the Universal Postal Union (UPU), a UN agency in charge of the world’s postal policies, voted to block the use of UK stamps from the remote archipelago.

The UN postal agency has banned the British stamps from being used on the Chagos archipelago. Now, the UPU will discontinue the stamps bearing the words British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT).

All post from the Chagos Islands must now bear stamps from Mauritius.

'Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation'

⇒ P Narasimha Karanth of Bengaluru has been chosen for the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation. Karanth is one of the founding members of the Indo-Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Karnataka.

A businessman, Karanth has played an active role in planning and implementing Indo-Japanese cultural and exchange events, and promoting Japanese companies in the state of Karnataka.

The honour is given to individuals or organisations for their commitment in promoting the relationship between Japan and India.

Army Sports Institute Stadium, Pune is named after Neeraj Chopra

⇒ Raksha Mantri, Shri Rajnath Singh visited the Army Sports Institute, Pune on 27 August 2021.

During his maiden visit, the Raksha Mantri unveiled the new name of Army Sports Institute stadium, Pune as “Neeraj Chopra Stadium”.

Fit India Mobile Application

⇒ The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur launched the Fit India Mobile Application on 29th August 2021 at the iconic Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in Delhi.

Fit India Freedom Run 2.0 has been celebrated as part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ – An initiative of the central government to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of India’s Independence.

Women’s Equality Day

⇒ The Women’s Equality Day is celebrated every year on August 26 in the United States to mark the American women’s advancements towards equality with men.

History:

The United States Congress established August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day” in 1971.

August 26, the date was chosen to honor the 1920 approval of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which granted women the right to vote.
