Indian Coast Guard Ship 'Vigraha'

⇒ Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Vigraha’, the seventh in the series of offshore patrol vessels, was commissioned by Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh on 28 August 2021 at Chennai.

The ship will be based in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh and operate on the eastern seaboard under the Operational and Administrative Control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (East).

Designed and built by:

The 98-meter Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) has been designed and built indigenously by Larsen & Toubro Ship Building Limited.

About the Ship:

» It is fitted with advanced technology radars, navigation & communication equipment, sensors and machinery capable of operating in tropical sea conditions.

» It is designed to carry one twin-engine Helicopter and four high speed boats for boarding operation, search & rescue, law enforcement and maritime patrol.

» The ship displaces approximately 2,200 tons and is propelled by two 9100 KW diesel engines to attain a maximum speed of 26 nautical miles per hour with endurance of 5000 nm at economical speed.

QSim – Quantum Computer Simulator Toolkit

⇒ Recently, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics & Information Technology, launched QSim – Quantum Computer Simulator Toolkit, to enable Researchers and Students to carryout research in Quantum Computing in a cost effective manner.

About QSim:

QSim is an outcome of the project “Design and Development of Quantum Computer Toolkit (Simulator, Workbench) and Capacity Building”.

This is one of the first initiatives in the country to address the common challenge of advancing the Quantum Computing research frontiers in India.

Project executed by:

This project is being executed collaboratively by IISc Bangalore, IIT Roorkee and C-DAC with the support of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.

Key features of QSim:

Intuitive UI: QSim offers a robust QC Simulator integrated with a GUI based Workbench.

Simulate noisy Quantum logic circuits: Helps simulate Quantum circuits with and without noise and test how well various algorithms work with imperfect quantum components.

Pre-loaded Quantum algorithms: QSim comes loaded with Quantum programs and algorithms providing a head start to the users.

Integrated with HPC: The quantum simulations are performed on powerful HPC resources allowing multiple users to submit jobs simultaneously with different QuBit configurations.

"Karmayogi" Digital Learning Facility for Civil Servants

⇒ Recently, the Union Minister of State (I/C) Science & Technology; Minister of State (I/C) Earth Sciences; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurated the “Karmayogi” Digital Learning Facility for Civil Servants at the Institute of Secretariat Training & Management, a premier Central Training Institution under the Department of Personnel & Training.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said, “Mission Karmayogi aims to create a dedicated work force not only of the Civil Services but more than that it would serve the cause of Indian society”.

The National Programme for Civil Services Capacity Building (‘NPCSCB’) – “Mission Karmayogi” was approved by the Government on 2nd September, 2020 with the objective of enhancing governance through Civil Services Capacity Building.

G20 Ministerial Conference on Women’s Empowerment

⇒ The Union Minister of Women & Child Development, Smt Smriti Irani addressed the first ever G20 Ministerial Conference on Women’s Empowerment on 26 August 2021. It was held at Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy in a hybrid format.

Discussion:

The G20 Conference on Women Empowerment acknowledged the common objectives.

The G20 Conference also shared the responsibilities to advance the goals of equality and development of women and girls in all spheres including STEM, Financial and Digital Literacy, Environment and Sustainability.

Addressing the G20 Conference:
    • Smt Smriti Irani reaffirmed India’s commitment towards addressing gender and women centric issues through mutual cooperation.
    • She conveyed India’s solidarity with the G20 for promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment amongst partner countries.
    • She joined the Gender Equality Ministers of the G20 in committing to promote gender equality and empowerment of women through cooperation and coordination at all relevant fora.

7th meeting of the BRICS Environment Ministerial 2021

⇒ Recently the 7th meeting of the BRICS Environment Ministerial 2021 was held virtually at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi, under the chair of India. Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shri Bhupender Yadav chaired the meeting.

The meeting was preceded by the BRICS Joint Working Group on Environment meeting on 26th August, 2021.

Participants:

The meeting was participated by the Environment Ministers from the BRICS nations.

At the 7th meeting of the BRICS Environment Ministerial 2021:

» India stressed on the need for taking concrete collective global actions against global environment and climate challenge, guided by equity, national priorities and circumstances, and the principles of “Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC).

» The Environment Ministers adopted the New Delhi Statement on Environment, which is also aimed at furthering the spirit of Cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation and Consensus in Environment among the BRICS Nations.

2021 Barcelona Open chess tournament

⇒ Recently, Indian Grandmaster S P Sethuraman won the 2021 Barcelona Open chess tournament title.

Chennai-born Sethuraman collected 7.5 points from nine rounds to emerge winner on the basis of a better tie-break score after Daniil Yuffa of Russia also finished level with the Indian player.

Indian player Karthikeyan Murali also finished third.

UP government adopted Indian wrestling

⇒ In a massive boost for the Indian wrestling, the Uttar Pradesh government has adopted Indian wrestling.

In the proposal:
  • It is expected to pump in an investment of Rs 170 crore in infrastructure and support to the wrestlers till the 2032 Olympics.
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) asked for support in three phases:
  • Till the 2024 Games, asked for Rs 10 crore support per year (Rs 30 crore)
  • In the next Olympic cycle till 2028, asked for a support of Rs 15 crore per year (Rs 60 crore)
  • In the final phase till 2032, asked for a support of Rs 20 crore per year (Rs 80 crore)
