DRDO Develops Critical Near Isothermal Forging Technology

⇒ Defence Research and Development Organisation has established the near isothermal forging technology to produce all the five stages of high-pressure compressors discs out of difficult-to-deform titanium alloy using its unique 2000 MT isothermal forge press. This is a crucial technology for establishing self-reliance in aeroengine technology.

The technology has been developed by Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, a premier metallurgical laboratory of DRDO at Hyderabad.

With this development, India has joined the league of limited global engine developers to have the manufacturing capabilities of such critical aero engine components.

Saline Gargle RT-PCR Method for Testing COVID-19 Samples

⇒ Scientists of Nagpur-based National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) under Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) have developed a ‘Saline Gargle RT-PCR Method’ for testing COVID-19 samples.

Process:

In the Saline Gargle RT-PCR method uses a simple collection tube filled with saline solution. The patient gargle the solution and rinses it inside the tube. This sample in the collection tube is taken to the laboratory for test.

Benefits:

The Saline Gargle method offers a bunch of attractive benefits. It is simple, fast, cost-effective, patient-friendly and comfortable. It also offers instant results and is well-suited for rural and tribal areas, given minimal infrastructure requirements.

Appointment of New CBI Chief

⇒ A 1985-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Subodh Kumar Jaiswal has been appointed as Director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of 2 years. A Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led three-member selection committee has shortlisted Jaiswal as the new CBI Chief on 24 May 2021.

Jaiswal is currently the director general of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Previously, he has also served as Maharashtra’s director general of police.

New Zealand's next governor-general

⇒ The first Indigenous Maori woman Cindy Kiro has been named New Zealand’s next governor-general. Kiro’s five-year term begins in October. She will replace Patsy Reddy.

63 years old, Kiro is currently chief executive of the Royal Society, a nonprofit group. She was previously the nation’s Children’s Commissioner.

New Prime Minister of Israel

⇒ A 49-year-old leader of the right-wing Yamina party, Naftali Bennett was sworn-in as the 13th Prime Minister of Israel on 13 June 2021.

The Israeli parliament Knesset elected Bennett as PM by a 60-59 vote in the 120 member house.

Victory of Bennett ended the 12-year power of former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the country’s longest-serving leader.

Mr Bennett will be prime minister until September 2023 as part of a power-sharing deal. He will then hand power over to Yair Lapid for a further two years.

⇒ Red Bull Racing Honda Driver, Max Verstappen won the Formula 1 Grand Prix De Monaco 2021. The 2021 Monaco Grand Prix which took place over 78 laps of the 3.337-kilometre Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo, on 23 May 2021.

2021 Cricket South Africa Awards

⇒ 2021 Cricket South Africa Awards winners were announced at the virtual event on 31 May 2021. Anrich Nortje and Shabnim Ismail were crowned South Africa’s Men’s and Women’s Cricketer of the Year in their respective categories.

Ex-Formula One boss, Max Mosley

⇒ Ex-Formula One boss & British racing driver, Max Mosley has died on 23 May 2021 in London. He was 81. Mosley was the President of motorsports’ ruling body the FIA from 1993 to 2009.
