Technotex 2023: Envisioning Indian Technical Textiles @2047

⇒ ‘Technotex 2023: Envisioning Indian Technical Textiles @2047’, the 10th International Exhibition and Conference on Technical Textiles, was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Textiles Darshana Jardosh at Bombay Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, Mumbai on 22 February 2023.

Union Minister Darshana Jardosh also launched an e-book on Technical Textiles titled ‘Technical Textiles Ecosystem in India: Market Overview, Inherent Linkages and Growth Opportunities’ on the occasion.

    • MoS Textiles further informed that India is the third largest exporter of textile and apparel.

» The Minister also mentioned the National Technical Textiles Mission which has an outlay of Rs 1,480 crores. The key pillars of NTTM include ‘Research Innovation & Development’, ‘Promotion and Market Development’, ‘Education, Training and Skilling’ and ‘Export Promotion’. The focus of the Mission is for developing usage of technical textiles in various flagship missions and programmes of the country including strategic sectors.

About Technotex 2023:

Technotex 2023 was a flagship event comprising buyer-seller meets, an international exhibition and conference.

    • The three-day event, held during February 22 – 24, 2023, provided a common platform for interaction amongst stakeholders from across the global technical textile value chain.

Organized by:

Technotex 2023 was organized by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India in collaboration with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce Industry (FICCI), under National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM).

    • It comprised of B2B (international, Domestic, and Institutional), Exhibition, Conference and Seminars, CEO’s Forum, Reverse Buyer Seller Meet (RBSM), High Level Roundtables, Investor Discussions, Country and State Sessions.

» The three-day exhibition cum conference cum buyer-seller meets has sought to envision Indian Technical Textiles at 2047.

    • It exemplifies the immense potential for trade and investment between India and foreign countries in the technical textile sector.
    • It pooled in participants, visitors, and other key decision makers from a diverse cross section of the Technical Textiles Industry, aiming to provide more innovative solutions, identify new business opportunities and create an environment congenial for growth.

» The first edition of Technotex was organized in 2011.

India’s Market Size:
    • India is the 6th largest producer of Technical Textiles.
    • India is the 2nd largest Man-Made Fibre (MMF) producer in the world.
    • Indian Textiles and Apparel Industry was valued at USD 108.5 Bn in 2019-20.
    • Provides employment to 45 Mn people in India.
    • India has attracted USD 3.8 Bn FDI in Textiles during 2000-21.
    • India has attracted USD 3.99 Bn FDI in Textiles during 2000-22.
    • Indian Textiles & Apparel Exports stood at USD 43.5 Billion in 2021-22.
    • India allows 100% FDI through automatic route in the Textile industry.
    • Sector Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) expected at 28% during 2019-21.
    • Indian Technical Textiles market is the 5th largest in the world, sized at USD 22.5 billion in 2021-22. 

SemiconIndia Conference of Electronics Manufacturing Supply Chain Ecosystem

⇒ The Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology and Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the ‘SemiconIndia Conference of Electronics Manufacturing Supply Chain Ecosystem’ on 18 February 2023 in New Delhi.

The Secretary, MeitY, Shri Alkesh Kumar Sharma; Shri Ajit Manocha, President SEMI and Member, Advisory Board of ISM, Shri Amitesh Kumar Sinha, Joint Secretary, MeitY & CEO ISM, other senior officials from MeitY, state governments, delegates from global semiconductor industry, potential semicon investors and academicians also participated in the event.

Some of the prominent sessions during the conference included-
    1. Panel discussion on the existing semiconductor ecosystem in India with participants from SCL, GAETEC and STARC
    2. Presentation on facilitating the development of semiconductor ecosystem by Mark Patel, Sr. Partner, McKinsey
    3. Panel discussion regarding the fab construction and availability of requisite chemicals, gasses with participation from Micron, Jacobs, L&T, PDF Solutions and Linde
    4. Presentation on vision for skilled workforce generation by Ms. Jaya Jagdish, SVP, AMD India
    5. Panel discussion regarding the industry readiness, challenges for materials and equipment with panellists from Applied Materials, Lam Research, KLA, e-fab, TOK and Merck
    6. Panel Discussion regarding Policies and readiness of State Governments for semiconductor ecosystem with Panellists form State Governments of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Gujarat
    7. Panel discussion regarding the concerns of the industry, key asks for the establishment of manufacturing facilities with panellists from Global Foundries, Texas Instrument, ST Microelectronics, IBM, Western Digital and JSW steel
About SemiconIndia Programme:
    • The Union Cabinet had approved the comprehensive Semicon India programme with a financial outlay of INR 76,000 crore for the development of a sustainable semiconductor and display ecosystem in 2021.
    • Semicon India Program aims to provide attractive incentive support to companies/consortia that are engaged in Silicon Semiconductor Fabs, Display Fabs, Compound Semiconductors/Silicon Photonics/Sensors (including MEMS) Fabs, Semiconductor Packaging (ATMP/OSAT) and Semiconductor Design.
    • The program will give an impetus to semiconductor and display manufacturing by facilitating capital support and technological collaborations.

⇒ SemiconIndia 2023 on ‘Catalyzing India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem’ will be held on July 28-30, 2023 at Gandhinagar Gujarat.

    • The Conference will be inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi on 28th July, 2023.

The ‘SemiconIndia 2023’ is being organised by India Semiconductor Mission in partnership with industry and industry associations under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) is a specialized and independent Business Division within the Digital India Corporation that aims to build a vibrant semiconductor and display ecosystem to enable India’s emergence as a global hub for electronics manufacturing and design.

Aim:

» SemiconIndia 2023 is organising with the aim to make India a global hub for Semiconductor Design, Manufacturing and Technology Development which will help propel the vision of India Semiconductor Mission.

2nd Digital Economy Working Group Meeting

⇒ Making progress on the ‘G20 Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG)’, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) organised the second in-person meeting of DEWG in Hyderabad from April 17-19, 2023.

    • The three-day meeting was attended by 81 foreign delegates from G20 Members, 8 Guest Countries, 5 International organizations, and one Regional Organisation.
Day 1:

On the first day, three thematic sessions were organised as a part of side events. The sessions saw a discussion among the panel from international and national experts and an intense Q&A with the participants.

The topics included were:

High-Speed Mobile Broadband and its Impacts-

    • Panelists deliberated on ‘High-Speed Mobile Broadband & its Impacts on Lives, Society & Industry’. They also highlighted the ways technology is rapidly transforming our lifestyle & workspace.

Digital Inclusion – Connecting the Unconnected-

    • The panelists discussed the strategies to bridge the digital divide for achieving inclusive development, meaningful connectivity, and affordable devices.

Sustainable Green Digital Infrastructure: Challenges and Opportunities-

    • The delegates focused on telecom infrastructure, the significance of the circular economy in green telecom & e-waste management practices.
Day 2:

» A multi-stakeholder workshop on “Mutual Recognition Framework on Digital Skills” was also organised.

    • The best practices and latest initiatives on the subject matter were presented by the respective experts from the Government, Industry, and Academia.

» The workshop explored ways in which digital skills can be recognised across borders & develop a framework to promote global digital skill recognition.

    • The insightful deliberations held during the workshop were appreciated by the participating delegates.

» Thereafter, in-depth discussion on the priority area titled ‘Digital Skilling’ was held.

    • The participating delegates discussed the critical role of Digital Skilling in shaping Digital Transformation and creating the Future Ready Workforce. Inclusive development was reemphasized during the discussion.
Day 3:

On the third and last day of the meeting, detailed discussions on the priority areas were held on the following topics:

    1. Digital Public Infrastructure
    2. Cyber Security in Digital Economy
    • To bring coherence among the various Working Groups and Parallel Tracks of G20, the respective leads from GPFI and the Health WG also presented their progress and linkage with DEWG.
    • DPI Initiatives especially related to Financial Inclusion & Universal Digital Healthcare and their impacts in India were highlighted. The meeting concluded with the Drafting of the Declaration and discussions on the way forward.
