National level event, “Garib Kalyan Sammelan”

⇒ The national level event, named “Garib Kalyan Sammelan” was held at Shimla, Himachal Pradesh on 31st May 2022.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi visited Shimla on 31st May to participate in the ‘Garib Kalyan Sammelan’. The Prime Minister addressed the ‘Garib Kalyan Sammelan’.

During the event, the Prime Minister interacted with the beneficiaries of about sixteen schemes and progammes spanning nine Ministries and Departments of the Government of India as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations through video conferencing.

    • This novel public programme marking the completion of eight years of the government led by the Prime Minister was organized across the country at State Capitals, District Headquarters, and Krishi Vigyan Kendras.
    • The idea behind this programme was to enable the elected public representatives across the country to interact directly with the public to get feedback about the various welfare programmes being run by the government.

» Under this series of events, the scheme beneficiaries interacted with Chief Ministers, Central and State Ministers, Members of Parliament, Members of Legislative Assembly and other elected public representatives.

» Prime Minster interacted with beneficiaries about the impact of the wide-ranging schemes/programmes such as:

Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, Poshan Abhiyan, Pradhan Mantri Matri Vandana Yojana, Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural and Urban), Jal Jeevan Mission and AMRUT, Pradhan Mantri Swanidhi Yojana, One Nation-One Ration Card, Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, Ayushman Bharat PM Jan Arogya Yojana, Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres and Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana.

11th installment of financial benefits under PM-KISAN scheme:

The Prime Minister also released the 11th installment of financial benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme.

    • This will enable the transfer of an amount of around Rs.21,000 crore to more than 10 crore beneficiary farmer families.

Kerala State Film Awards 2022

» Kerala’s Minister for Cultural, Fisheries and Youth Affairs Saji Cherian announced the winners of the Kerala State Film Awards 2022 on 27 May 2022.

The jury for the 52nd edition of the awards was headed by filmmaker-screenwriter Saeed Akhtar Mirza.

    • A total of 142 films competed for the awards.
    • The 52nd Kerala State Film Awards was presented by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy.

Chairman of Assocham's National Council on IT & ITEs & Digital Commerce

⇒ The Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry of India (Assocham) has named Kulmeet Bawa, president and MD, SAP Indian Subcontinent, as chairman of Assocham’s National Council on IT & ITEs & Digital Commerce.

    • The council is tasked primarily with “accelerating value creation through Digital Transformation and Focus on Emerging technologies, and on the formulation of policies and implementation guidelines related to emerging technologies such as cloud computing, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain.
    • It also works with other stakeholders to integrate efforts related to policy advocacy and thought leadership on cyber-physical systems such as Industry 4.0, logistics, Skilling, smart cities etc.

Frontier, World's fastest supercomputer

⇒ Frontier has become the world’s fastest supercomputer, according to the 59th edition of the Top500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers.

Frontier, a supercomputer built using Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) architecture and equipped with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) processors, outperformed Fugaku to become the world’s fastest supercomputer.

    • The supercomputer will be able to help with modelling and simulating complex scientific research, across biological, physical and chemical sciences.
Key Points:
    • The supercomputer, built for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has reached Linmark benchmark score of 1.1 exaflops, making it the world’s first supercomputer to break the exascale speed barrier.
    • Fugaku, installed at the RIKEN Center for Computational Science in Kobe, Japan, has a Linmark benchmark score of 442 petaflops.

Note: 1 exaflop is equivalent to 1,000 petaflops.

    • Frontier has 8,730,112 total cores and is built on the latest HPE Cray EX235a architecture and powered with AMD EPYC 64C 2GHz processors.
    • Frontier is also ranked number one as the world’s most energy-efficient supercomputer, on the Green500 list.

2022 Women's T20 Challenge

⇒ The 2022 Women’s T20 Challenge was held from 23 May to 28 May, 2022 at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune. It was the 4th season of the Women’s T20 Challenge.

    • The Women’s T20 Challenge is a Twenty20 Cricket tournament established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2018.
    • The Women’s T20 Challenge was a three-team tournament. It consisted of a three-match group stage, followed by the final.
Result:

The final match was played on 28 May at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

    • Supernovas Score: 165/7 (20 overs)
    • Velocity Score: 161/8 (20 overs)

In the final match, IPL Supernovas beat IPL Velocity by 4 runs to win their 3rd title.

Background:
    • Prior to this, Supernovas had won the first two editions of the Women’s T20 Challenge in 2018 and 2019.
    • In 2020, Trailblazers won the tournament. The previous edition was postponed due to covid-19.

2022 Monaco Grand Prix Formula 1 Race

⇒ The 2022 Monaco Grand Prix Formula 1 Race took place over 78 laps of the 3.337-kilometre Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo on 29 May, 2022.

Winner:

Red Bull Racing RBPT Driver, Sergio Perez won the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix (Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco 2022).
