Durand Cup 2025, a football tournament, was played from 23 July to 23 August 2025 at various venues Imphal, Kokrajhar, Kolkata, Shillong and Jamshedpur.

» The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu unveiled and flagged off the Trophies of the Durand Cup Tournament 2025 at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre on July 4, 2025.

  • This is the 134th edition of the Durand Cup, which is the world’s third-oldest Football Cup competition and the oldest in Asia.
  • The 2025 Durand Cup is the fourth edition since it was supported by the Asian Football Confederation.

  • The Indian Armed Forces-organized tourney, running since 1888, is also the traditional curtain-raiser for the Indian domestic football season.
  • The tournament is hosted by the Durand Football Tournament Society in co-operation with the AIFF, Eastern Command of the Indian Armed Forces and the Government of West Bengal, supported by the governments Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Jharkhand.
Format of 134th Durand Cup:

The format of the Durand Cup Tournament 2025 consisted of two stages – a group stage and knockout rounds.

  • For the group stage, the 24 teams were divided into six groups of four teams each.
  • After single round-robin matches, the six group winners and two best second-placed sides across all groups made the quarter-finals.
  • A total of 43 matches were played in Durand Cup 2025.

» NorthEast United FC won the Durand Cup football tournament 2025 by defeating Diamond Harbour FC 6–1 in the final held at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium), Kolkata on 23 August 2025.

  • The Highlanders or NorthEast United FC became the first team since East Bengal FC in 1991 to successfully defend the Durand Cup.

About Durand Cup:
  • The Durand Cup is an annual domestic football competition in India which was first held in 1888 in Shimla.
  • The tournament is named after its founder Sir Henry Mortimer Durand, the foreign secretary of India from 1884 to 1894.
  • The winner of the tournament is presented with three trophies, Durand Cup, Shimla Trophy, President’s Cup.
  • The three Trophies unique to the tournament are, the Durand Cup (a rolling trophy and the original prize), the Shimla Trophy (also a rolling trophy and first given by the residents of Shimla in 1904) and the President’s Cup (first presented by Dr Rajendra Prasad in 1956).
  • In the 2024 final, NorthEast United FC defeated Mohun Bagan Super Giant 2–2 (Neufc, 4-3 pens) to win the tournament.
  • Mohun Bagan SG is the most successful team in Durand history with 17 titles, followed by city rivals East Bengal, who have won 16 titles.
