‘SAGAR SAMRIDDHI’ - the online dredging monitoring system

⇒ Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) and Ayush Shri Sarbananda Sonowal launched ‘SAGAR SAMRIDDHI’ – the online dredging monitoring system – in order to accelerate ‘Waste to Wealth’ initiative of the Ministry on 09 June 2023.

Developed by:

» This system has been developed by National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC) the technological arm of MoPSW.

    • The NTCPWC was established under the Sagarmala Programme of MoPSW with the total investment of ₹ 77 Crores at IIT Madras which was inaugurated by the Minister on 24th April 2023.
    • The aim of the centre is to enable research & development for the marine sector, enabling solutions towards achieving the ultimate goal of building a robust marine industry in the country.
    • This state-of-the-art centre has world class capabilities for undertaking the 2D & 3D investigations of research and consultancy nature for the Port, Coastal, and Waterways sector across all disciplines.
Key Points:
    • The new technology brings in marked improvement against the old system of Draft & Loading Monitor (DLM) system.
    • The system will bring in synergy among multiple input reports like daily dredging report, the pre and post dredging survey data before processing and producing real time dredging report.
    • The ‘Sagar Samriddhi’ monitoring system will also allow Daily and monthly progress Visualisation, Dredger performance and downtime monitoring, easy location track data with snapshot of loading, unloading and idle time.
    • This system strengthens the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India vision of PM Modi.
Capabilities of ‘Sagar Samriddhi’ include:
    1. Real time dredging progress report
    2. Daily and monthly progress Visualisation
    3. Dredger performance and downtime monitoring
    4. Easy location track data with snapshot of loading, unloading and idle time

Exhibition "Hamari Bhasha, Hamari Virasat" on the occasion of 75th International Archives Day

⇒ Minister of State for Culture, Smt. Meenakashi Lekhi inaugurated an exhibition under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) titled “Hamari Bhasha, Hamari Virasat” on 09 June 2023 to celebrate 75th International Archives Day at National Archives of India, New Delhi.

    • The exhibition remained open for public viewing till 08 July 2023.

On the occasion, Mrs. Meenakashi Lekhi said, “On the occasion of International Archives Day, National Archives of India has made available the Gilgit Manuscripts written between the 5″ -6″ centuries CE, which is the oldest surviving manuscript collection in India.

Presentation:
    • The Exhibition presented a selection of original manuscripts drawn from the annals of the archival repository (such as the birch-bark Gilgit manuscripts, Tattvartha Sutra, Ramayana, and Srimad Bhagwad Gita, among others), official files of the government, proscribed literature under the colonial regime, private manuscripts of eminent personalities, as well as from the rich collection of rare books held in the NAI Library.
    • The Exhibition included among the most ancient in the world – the Gilgit Manuscripts, the oldest surviving manuscript collection in India. The birch bark folios (documents written on pieces of inner layer of the bark of birch trees; birch bark is known for its resistance to decay and decomposition) contain both canonical (sacred) and non-canonical Buddhist works that throw light on the evolution of Sanskrit, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Mongolian, Machu and Tibetan religious-philosophical literature.
    • According to consensus, they were written between the 5th -6th centuries CE. The Gilgit Manuscripts were discovered in three stages in the Naupur village (Gilgit region), and first announced by archaeologist Sir Aurel Stein in the year 1931.
    • This exhibition was an endeavour to commemorate the treasured heritage of India’s linguistic diversity as a Nation: “राष्ट्र एक भाषा अनेक”. India is blessed with extraordinary language diversity. According to an estimate’, out of 7,111 languages spoken globally, about 788 languages are spoken in India alone. India is thus one of the four most linguistically diversified countries in the world, along with Papa New Guinea, Indonesia, and Nigeria.
About NAI:
    • The National Archives of India was established on 11 March 1891 at Kolkata (Calcutta) as the Imperial Record Department.
    • Following the transfer of the capital from Calcutta to Delhi in 1911, the present building of the National Archives of India was constructed in 1926 which was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The transfer of all records from Calcutta to New Delhi was completed in 1937.
    • The National Archives of India is also the nodal agency for the implementation of the Public Records Act, 1993 and Public Record Rules, 1997.

20th Asian U20 Athletics Championships 2023

⇒ The 2023 Asian U20 Athletics Championships took place from June 4–7, 2023 at the Yecheon Stadium in Yecheon, South Korea.

    • It was the 20th edition of the international athletics competition for Asian under-20 athletes.
    • It was organized by the Asian Athletics Association.
Results:

» Japan topped the medals table with a total of 23 medals – 14 golds, 4 silvers and 5 bronze. China finished second with 11 golds, 5 silvers and 3 bronze medals.

Performance of India:

» India stood third among 45 countries with a total of 19 medals including 6 gold, 7 silver and 6 bronze.

The last edition of the Asian U20 Athletics Championships was held in Japan in 2018. India concluded that event with 17 medals, of which five were gold, two silver and 10 bronze medals.

Important Day

International Archives Day 2023

⇒ International Archives Day is celebrated every year on 9 June.

    • The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the importance of archives.
History:
    • During the 2004 International Congress of International Council on Archives (ICA) in Vienna, 2000 attending participants adopted a resolution requesting that the United Nations designates a specific day to mark the importance and value of archives.
    • In 2005, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared October 27 as the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (WDAH) during the 33rd session of the UNESCO General Conference held in Paris, France.
    • Subsequently, it was decided at the 2007 ICA Annual General Meeting that June 9 would be celebrated as International Archives Day. The date, June 9, was chosen to commemorate the date ICA was created under the auspices of UNESCO in 1948.
    • 2023 also marks the 75 Year of the International Council on Archives (ICA).
