Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023

The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu presented the Swachh Survekshan awards 2023 at a function organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi on January 11, 2024.

  • This year, 24 National, 20 Zonal and 54 State level awards were announced.
  • 13 awardees received felicitations under categories of Clean Cities, Cleanest Cantonment, SafaiMitra Suraksha, Ganga Towns and Best Performing State were given away.
» The President of India also launched the Swachh Survekshan 2023 dashboard.
About Swachh Survekshan 2023:
  • Swachh Survekshan 2023 was rolled out on 24 May, 2022, with telephonic feedback from citizens on various parameters of city cleanliness.
  • The theme of Swachh Survekshan 2023 was “Waste to Wealth”.
  • Swachh Survekshan 2023 indicators focused on parameters pertaining to segregated door-to-door waste collection, zero waste events, Divyang-friendly toilets, improved plastic waste management and cleaning backlanes.
  • The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) conducted Field Assessment for the 8th edition of the world’s largest urban swachhata survey, Swachh Survekshan 2023 – Mera Shehar, Meri Pehchan.
  • Under SS 2023, around 3,000 assessors completed the field for assessment from 1 July, 2023.
  • SS 2023 focused on transforming waste into valuable resources and was evaluated by a team of over 3,000 assessors.

» Originally designed as a competitive monitoring tool, Swachh Survekshan was introduced under the aegis of MoHUA in 2016, with an objective to sanitation, helping cities to achieve the goal of sustainable sanitation and waste management in a fast-track competitive manner.

Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 Winners:

Cleanest city award:

  • This year the cleanest city award showcased joint winners. Port city Surat bagged the top honours, alongside Indore, who had conquered the top spot alone for 6 consecutive years.

Population of less than 1 lakh:

  • In the category of cities with a population of less than 1 lakh, Sasvad, Patan and Lonavala secured the top three spots.

Cleanest Cantonment Board:

  • Mhow Cantonment Board in Madhya Pradesh was adjudged the Cleanest Cantonment Board.

Cleanest Ganga Towns:

  • Varanasi and Prayagraj won the top two awards amongst the Cleanest Ganga Towns.

Best Performing State:

  • Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh won the top three awards for Best Performing State.

Best Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher:

  • Chandigarh walked away with the award for the Best Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher.

» 110 awards were bestowed during the ceremony.
