PM Shri Narendra Modi receives the highest national civilian award – “The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago” in Port of Spain
Her Excellency Christine Carla Kangaloo ORTT, President of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago conferred upon Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi the highest national award – “The Order of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago” at a special ceremony held at the President’s House on 04 July 2025.
» Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was given this honour for his statesmanship, for championing the priorities of the Global South and for his exceptional contribution to strengthening the relationship between India and Trinidad & Tobago.

- Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is the first foreign leader to be conferred the award.
The honour was conferred on Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi while he was on an official visit to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago from 3 to 4 July 2025, at the invitation of the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
About the ‘Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago:
» The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (ORTT) is the highest civilian honour of Trinidad and Tobago.
- Established in 2008, it replaced the Trinity Cross as the decoration for distinguished and outstanding service to the country.
- The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago may be awarded to any person (citizen as well as non-citizen) who has rendered distinguished and outstanding service to Trinidad and Tobago.
PM’s visit to Republic of Trinidad and Tobago:
» Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi met with Christine Carla Kangaloo, the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, at the President’s House in Port of Spain.
- This year, Christine Carla Kangaloo has been awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award 2025.
This landmark visit – the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 26 years, was imbued with profound significance, as it coincided with the 180th anniversary of the arrival of Indian immigrants to Trinidad and Tobago in 1845.
Joint Session of the Parliament:
» Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi also addressed the Joint Session of the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago.
- Addressing the event, Prime Minister Modi congratulated Trinidad and Tobago for becoming the first nation in the Caribbean area to adopt UPI (Unified Payments Interface).
Key Discussions:
- The two Prime Ministers held comprehensive discussions on a wide range of bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest.
- Both leaders expressed satisfaction at the depth and breadth of the relationship and reaffirmed their resolve to build a broad-based, inclusive, and forward-looking partnership in areas such as health, ICT, culture, sports, trade, economic development, agriculture, justice, legal affairs, education and skill development.
- They welcomed the signing of important agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in key sectors, including pharmaceuticals, development cooperation, academia, cultural exchange, diplomatic training and sports.
- Both leaders underscored the need of greater bilateral trade and investment exchanges by encouraging direct channels between the business support organizations of the two countries.
- Both Prime Ministers recalled that 30 May 2025 marked the 180th anniversary of the arrival in 1845 of the first Indian immigrants to Trinidad and Tobago.

Along with this, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has so far received the highest civilian honours from 25 countries, which is the highest number of honours received by any Indian leader.
