Tamil Nadu Scientist Awards 2019

⇒ The Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology has announced the annual Tamil Nadu Scientist Awards (TANSA) for 2019 under the various Science categories.

⇒ Wayne Burgess has been appointed as head of vehicle design for its entire product range including scooters, bikes, cars and more, Ola Electric announced on 04 May 2021.

1st BRICS Employment Working Group (EWG) Meeting

⇒ Shri Apurva Chandra, Secretary, Labour and Employment chaired the 1st BRICS Employment Working Group (EWG) Meeting held on 11-12 May 2021 in New Delhi. India has assumed BRICS Presidency for the year 2021.

Prime Agenda:

The prime agenda for the discussions were Promoting Social Security Agreements amongst BRICS Nations, Formalization of labour markets, Participation of women in labour force and Gig and platform workers – Role in labour market.

Apart from representatives of member nations of BRICS the representatives of International Labour Organization (ILO) and International Social Security Agency (ISSA) also made valuable interventions and suggestions on the agenda issues.

About BRICS:

The member nations of BRICS are Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. BRICS was founded in June 2006 & headquartered in Shanghai, China.

2021 Italian Open Tennis Tournament

⇒ The 2021 Italian Open tennis tournament (also known as Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2021) was held at the Foro Italico in Rome, Italy, from 8 May to 16 May, 2021.

It was the 78th edition of the Italian Open. 2021 Italian Open included ATP Tour Masters 1000 event and WTA 1000 event.

International Nurses Day 2021

⇒ International Nurses Day is celebrated globally every year on May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

Florence Nightingale was a social reformer, statistician and the founder of modern nursing.

Theme:

The theme for the IND 2021 is Nurses: A Voice to Lead – A vision for future healthcare.

International Council of Nurses (ICN) commemorates this important day each year with the production and distribution of the International Nurses’ Day (IND) resources and evidence.

Death

Times Group chairperson, Indu Jain

⇒ Times Group chairperson, Indu Jain died on 13 May 2021 in Delhi. She was 84. India’s largest media group, Times Group is formally known as Bennett, Coleman & Co Ltd.

Indu Jain was the founder president of FICCI Ladies Organisation, established in 1983.

She also served as chairperson of Bharatiya Jnanpith Trust from 1999. Her father-in-law, Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain had founded Bharatiya Jnanpith Trust in 1944, to promote literature in Indian languages. Bharatiya Jnanpith Trust annually conferred the Jnanpith Award to authors writing in Indian languages.

Indu Jain was conferred with the Padma Bhushan in 2016. She was conferred a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India in 2019.

She had also received an award for Lifetime Contribution to Media by the All India Management Association in 2018, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Indian Congress of Women.

Former Akal Takht jathedar Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti

⇒ Former Akal Takht jathedar Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti died on Saturday night 15 May 2021 in Amritsar. He was 80.

Vedanti served as jathedar of the highest temporal seat of Sikhs from 2000 to 2008. He also served for a long time as the head granthi of the Golden Temple.
