National

6,000 Railway Station with Wi-Fi Facility

⇒ Indian Railways has commissioned Wi-Fi at 6,000th Railway station.

6000th Railway Station:

With the commissioning of Wi-Fi at Hazaribagh Town falling under Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand state in Dhanbad Division of East Central Railway as on 15 May 2021, Indian Railways commissioned Wi-Fi at 6,000 Railway stations.

First & 5000th Railway Station:

Indian Railways have started its Journey by providing Wi-Fi facility at 1st Railway station Mumbai in January 2016. Thereafter, provided 5000th Railway station, at Midanpore in West Bengal and reached 6000th Railway station i.e Hazaribagh on 15 May 2021.

Also, on 15 May 2021 Jarapada station in Angul District of state of Odisha was also provided with Wi-Fi.

Total no of Stations in Bihar:

In Bihar, total number of stations with Wi-Fi facility is 384, as on 15 May 2021.

Wi-Fi facility provides by:

Wi-Fi facility is being provided with the help of RailTel, a PSU under Ministry of Railways. This task was carried out in partnership with Google, DOT (under USOF), PGCIL and Tata Trust.

RBI Cancels Licence of United Cooperative Bank, West Bengal

⇒ The Reserve Bank of India has cancelled the licence of United Co-operative Bank Ltd, Bagnan, West Bengal.

RBI said the bank does not have adequate capital and earning prospects. Consequently, the bank ceased to carry on banking business, with effect from the close of business on May 13, 2021.

Cyclone Tauktae

⇒ Cyclone Tauktae (pronounced as Tau’Te) hit the west coast of India including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Kerala etc. It was formed in Arabian Sea on 14 May 2021.

Cyclone Tauktae has got its name from Myanmar country, which means- “Gecko”, a lizard known for its distinctive vocalisations. Cyclone names are given by countries on rotation basis in region.

Cyclone 'Yaas'

⇒ The Cyclone Yaas hit the eastern or the Coromandel coastal regions of the country including West Bengal, Odisha etc on May 26.

Cyclone Yaas was formed from a tropical disturbance in north Andaman Sea on 23rd May, 2021. The cyclone ‘Yaas’ has got its name from country Oman.

Author Bhaskar Chattopadhyay’s New Novel

⇒ Author Bhaskar Chattopadhyay’s new novel ‘Best Served Cold’ is about the four boys were wronged by a vicious man in tea estate within the Dooars area of Bengal, now, they have returned to avenge the crimes committed against them.

New UN Humanitarian Chief

⇒ Veteran British diplomat Martin Griffiths has been appointed as the new UN humanitarian chief.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced the appointment of Martin Griffiths of the United Kingdom as Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, on 12 May 2021.

New President of Israel

⇒ Veteran politician Isaac Herzog has been elected Israel’s 11th president in a secret ballot with a majority of 87 of 120 votes, in the Knesset (parliament).

Mr Herzog will officially replace outgoing President Reuven Rivlin next month. His seven year term as president will begin from 9 July 2021.

Herzog is currently the head of the Jewish Agency, a nonprofit that works with the government to promote immigration to Israel.

'2020-21 La Liga Title'

⇒ Atletico Madrid won the 2020-21 La Liga title with a 2-1 win over Valladolid on 22 May 2021. This was the Atletico Madrid eleventh La Liga title.

The 2020-21 La Liga season was the 90th edition of the Spanish Title La Liga. The Spanish league football match, La Liga season was started in September 2020 and concluded on 23 May 2021.

⇒ The Sikkim state celebrated their Statehood Day on 16 May 2021.

Death

Three-time National Table Tennis Champion, Venugopal Chandrasekhar

⇒Three-time National Table Tennis Champion, Venugopal Chandrasekhar passed away on 12 May 2021. He was 63.

Chandra was conferred with the Arjuna Award in 1982.  Chandrashekhar with Seetha Srikanth wrote an autobiography ‘My fightback from Death’s door’. The autobiography was published by Eastwest books, Chennai, in 2006.

Hockey Umpire, Ravinder Singh Sodhi

⇒ Hockey umpire Ravinder Singh Sodhi passed away in New Delhi on 12 May 2021. He had officiated in the Indira Gandhi International Gold Cup at Lucknow in 1988.

Founder of Chidbhavananda Ashram, Omkarananda Mahaswamiji

⇒ Founder of Chidbhavananda ashram at Theni in Tamil Nadu, Omkarananda Mahaswamiji died on 10 May 2021 in Madurai. He was 65.

He was known for expounding the essence of some of the sacred texts in Tamil, such as Tevaram, Tiruvachakam, Tirumandiram, Tayumanavars hymns, Bharatiyars songs and in particular Tirukural.
