Innovation Challenge for creating an Indian Language Learning App

⇒ MyGov in partnership with Department of Higher Education has launched an Innovation Challenge for creating an Indian Language Learning App. MyGov is the citizen engagement platform of the Government of India. The objective of this challenge is to create an app that will promote regional language literacy.

The Indian Language Learning app will enable individuals to learn simple sentences of any Indian language and acquire working knowledge of a language. The Innovation Challenge closed on 27 May 2021.

Magnetometer for measurements of Magnetic Fields

⇒ Scientists from Raman Research Institute (RRI), Bengaluru has developed the magnetometer for low cost, reliable & real-time measurements of magnetic fields.

Raman Research Institute (RRI), Bengaluru is an autonomous institute of the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.

In a new study, scientists from Raman Research Institute (RRI), Bengaluru have devised a more efficient, faster, and low-cost digital receiver system that can make precise measurements of magnetic fields. It was published in the journal IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement.

In communication systems, Digital signals are processed by hardware systems that transmit and receive the signals with the help of intermediate systems called ‘digital receiver systems’ or DRS.

ELDERLINE Project

⇒ The Ministry of Social Justice has started state wise call centres in major states under the ELDERLINE project.

The ELDERLINE is a facility operationalised with the assistance of Tata Trusts and NSE foundation.

Under the project, toll free helpline for elderly persons ELDERLINE (14567) becomes operational in 5 major States includes UP, MP, Rajasthan, TN and Karnataka. In Telangana, this facility has been working for more than a year.

This facility is made operational to address the problems of elders in the context of the ongoing COVID pandemic. This facility likely to become functional in all states very soon.

'Worldwide ICC Test Team Rankings'

⇒ India and New Zealand remain in the top two positions following the annual update of the Worldwide ICC Test Team Rankings on 13 May 2021.

India head the table after gaining the rating point of 121, followed by New Zealand, England, Australia, Pakistan sequentially.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

⇒ World Telecommunication and Information Society Day has been celebrated globally every year on 17 May.

Theme:

The theme for the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2021 is “Accelerating Digital Transformation in challenging times”.

Aim:

The aim of WTISD is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies can have to bridge the gap in society and economies and digital divide.

History:

World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated annually on 17 May, since 1969, to mark the founding of ITU and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865.

In November 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society called upon the UN General Assembly to declare 17 May as World Information Society Day.

In November 2006, the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, decided to celebrate both events on 17 May as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.

Death

Indian Mathematician, Mudumbai Seshachulu Narasimhan

⇒ Indian mathematician, Mudumbai Seshachulu Narasimhan died on 16 May 2021 in Bangalore. He was 88.

M S Narasimhan was known for his collaboration with mathematician C S Seshadri for their proof of the Narasimhan–Seshadri theorem.

He was the only Indian to receive the King Faisal International Prize in the field of science.

He was conferred with the Padma Bhushan award in 1990 and Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1975. He was also the recipient of Ordre national du Mérite from France in 1989.

Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member, Rajeev Satav

⇒ Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Satav died on 16 May 2021 in Pune. He was 46.

At the time of his death, he was the member of the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra. He represented as the member of Lok Sabha from Hingoli constituency between 2014 and 2019.
