21st Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2023

⇒ The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi addressed the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2023 on 04 November 2023.

Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2023 was held from October 31 to November 4, 2023. This was the 21st edition of Hindustan Times Leadership Summit.

Theme:

The theme of Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2023 was ‘Beyond Barriers’.

» The landmark 21st edition of the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit brought together leaders & icons from across the field of politics, sports, business, health & science, and entertainment.

About Hindustan Times Leadership Summit:
    • The Hindustan Times Leadership Summit was launched in 2003 to enhance the level of discourse on critical issues, encourage interaction among leaders in important areas and present international quality thought- platforms aimed at solutions.
    • The last twenty Summits have been outstanding successes with attendance by leaders from India and across the world.
    • The audience included senior politicians, bureaucrats, diplomats, business executives, thinkers, commentators and analysts. Over the years, the Summit has become one of India’s most prestigious and eagerly awaited fora.

Rear Admiral Rajesh Dhankhar takes over command of Eastern Fleet

⇒ Rear Admiral Rajesh Dhankhar, took over command of the Eastern Fleet, the Sword Arm of the Eastern Naval Command, from Rear Admiral Gurcharan Singh, on 10 November 2023.

    • The change of guard took place at an impressive ceremony held at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam.
About RAdm Rajesh Dhankhar:
    • RAdm Rajesh Dhankhar was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 July 1990 and is a specialist in Navigation & Direction.
    • The Flag Officer is a recipient of the Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry) in 2015 for Non Combatant Evacuation Operations (NEO) of Indian nationals from Aden and Al-Hodeida, Yemen.

AI Safety Summit 2023 in United Kingdom

⇒ Union Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Electronics & IT, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar participated in the “AI Safety Summit 2023” held at Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire in United Kingdom (UK) on November 1-2, 2023.

    • Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire is known to be a historically significant location as it was the base for World War II code-breaking operations.
Organized by:

The two-day AI Safety Summit 2023 was organized by the UK Government.

Objective:

The objective was to deliberate on the risks associated with AI, particularly at the cutting edge of its development, and to explore strategies for their mitigation through globally coordinated efforts.

Participation:
    • The ‘AI Safety Summit 2023’ assembled representatives from around the world, including governments, prominent AI corporations, civil society organizations, and research experts.
    • The two-day summit brought together Ministers and representatives from various countries, including the UK, US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, South Korea, among others.
    • The summit saw the participation of leading global think tanks, renowned academic institutions specializing in AI, and government representatives from like-minded nations.
Day 1:

» On the first day of the ‘AI Safety Summit 2023’, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, addressed the inaugural plenary session.

    • He emphasized India’s perspective on Artificial Intelligence, emphasizing our nation’s commitment to AI with a strong focus on safety, trust, and accountability.

» Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar also participated in discussions related to “Frontier AI risks,” with a specific focus on “Risks to Global Safety from Frontier AI Misuse.”

    • These discussions delved into safety risks associated with recent and next-generation frontier AI models, including their implications for biosecurity and cybersecurity.
Day 2:

» “India, in its capacity as the chair of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), has taken a leadership stand on AI. We have maintained that AI should be guided by principles of safety & trust for users, and accountability for platforms” Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar said during the second day of the summit.

» The Minister participated in two sessions named “Ministerial round table: Creating actions and next steps for future collaboration.”

    • During the session, the Minister discussed the importance of “Building a shared understanding of the risks of Frontier AI and future collaboration” and “Sharing global opportunities for AI,” where he highlighted the potential of AI and technology to enhance public services.

» Minister Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar also engaged in bilateral meetings with counterparts from the UK, Australia, the Netherlands, and Ireland.

» Overall, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar engaged in meaningful dialogues with his counterparts from around the world, centered on the theme of “AI for Good.”

The Bletchley Declaration:

On November 1, all nations who participated in the summit agreed to the “The Bletchley Declaration”. The document underscores the importance of aligning AI systems with human intentions and encourages a more in-depth exploration of the full potential of AI.

U23 World Wrestling Championships 2023

⇒ The U23 World Wrestling Championships 2023 was held from 23 to 29 October 2023 in Tirana, Albania.

    • It was the sixth edition of the U23 World Wrestling Championships.
    • The U23 World Wrestling Championships is organised by United World Wrestling.
Performance of India:

» Indian wrestlers won a total of 9 medals (one gold, two silver and six bronze) at the U-23 World Wrestling Championships 2023.

    • This was the best performance of the Indian team so far in the Under-23 World Wrestling Championships.
    • Reetika Hooda became the first ever Indian female wrestler to become the U-23 World Champion. Reetika defeated USA’s Kennedy Blades in the summit clash in Tirana to achieve the historic feat. She became only the second Indian ever since Aman Sehrawat (men’s freestyle 57 kg, 2022) to be crowned as U-23 World Champion.

» Aman Sehrawat had created history by becoming the first Indian wrestler to win a gold medal at the Under-23 World Wrestling Championships in Pontevedra, Spain in 2022.

    3. Monika- Women’s Freestyle 65 kg
    4. Naveen Malik- Men’s Freestyle 74 kg
    5. Sagar Jaglan- Men’s Freestyle 79 kg
    6. Sumit Dalal- Men’s Greco-Roman 60 kg

As a result of sanctions by the UWW imposed on the Wrestling Federation of India for not conducting its elections on time, wrestlers from India were not permitted to use the name, flag, or anthem of India. They instead participated under the name and the flag of the United World Wrestling (UWW).
