National:

SERB Women Excellence Award 2021

  • SERB announced the Women Excellence Award 2021 to four young women fellows of National Science Academies on the ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2021’.

The award is given by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), a statutory body of the Department of Science and Technology.

Four women scientists selected for the awards are:
  1. Dr. Shobhna Kapoor, Assistant Professor at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay
  2. Dr. Antara Banerjee, Scientist B, National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health, Mumbai, Maharashtra
  3. Dr. Sonu Gandhi, Scientist D, from National Institute of Animal Biotechnology, Hyderabad
  4. Dr. Ritu Gupta, Assistant Professor at Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Appointment of Chief Justice & Additional Judge of High Court:

  • The President of India has appointed Shri Justice Puligoru Venkata Sanjay Kumar, Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, to be the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court.
  • The President of India has appointed Smt Pushpa Virendra Ganediwala, to be an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court for a period of one year, with effect from 13th February, 2021.

Rajya Sabha Member from West Bengal:

  • Trinamool Congress leader Subrata Bakshi on 8 February 2021 took oath as a member of Rajya Sabha. Bakshi was elected to the Upper House from West Bengal last year.

International:

International Film Festival Rotterdam 2021:

  • The first part of 50th International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) 2021 was held from 1 February to 7 February, 2021. The 50th IFFR organised by Stichting International Film Festival Rotterdam.

In the IFFR 2021, Tamil film Pebbles (Koozhangal) directed by Indian filmmaker Vinothraj PS won the prestigious 2021 Tiger Award. ‘Pebbles’ (Koozhangal) is the first Tamil film to win this award.

The second part of IFFR 2021 will be held from 2 June to 6 June, 2021.

Death:

  • Former US Secretary of State, economist & diplomat George Shultz died in Stanford, California on 06 February 2021. He was 100.

George Shultz efforts as America’s top diplomat from 1982 to 1989 under the Republican Reagan helped lead to the conclusion of the four-decade-long Cold War that began after World War II.

  • American professional boxer, Leon Spinks has died on 5 February 2021. He was 67. He won the light heavyweight gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal

In only his eighth professional fight, he shocked the boxing world by beating Muhammad Ali to win the heavyweight title.
