SHILP SAMAGAM-2022

⇒ Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment, Dr. Virendra Kumar inaugurated the SHILP SAMAGAM-2022 in, New Delhi on 02 November 2022.

Addressing the Inaugration function Dr. Virendra Kumar said that through various channel partners of the three corporations – NBCFDC, NSFDC and NSKDFC under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is providing a good market system for the sale of products made by the artisans.

He said that in “Shilp Samagam – 2022” beneficiaries of top corporations have been invited to showcase and sell their handicraft products. 108 stalls have been allotted to them this year.

About Shilp Samagam:
    • Shilp Samagam was organized from 1st to 15th November, 2022.
    • During the 15 days Shilp Samagam-2022 marketing exhibition, the products from the 19 different states and Union Territories were displayed and sold.

Beneficiaries’ products include– metal craft products, wooden craft products, cane and bamboo items, ceramic products, handlooms and textiles, wooden utensils, jewellery, leather products, jute products, carpets/dairy, wooden craft products, Chennapatnam Wooden Toys, Phulkari Products, Water Hyacinth Products, Pickles & Organic Honey, Eri Embroidery Work & Sojni Embroidery Work, Screwpin Products, Case & Loin, Jacket, Rajasthani Jutti & Bead Work etc., and other products.

    • These products showcased the rich heritage and cultural diversity of the country.

India’s First Floating Financial Literacy Camp

⇒ India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) conducted India’s First Floating Financial Literacy Camp with an initiative called ‘Niveshak Didi’ to promote Financial Literacy ‘By the women, for the women’, in Srinagar, J&K on 02 November 2022.

To take the Financial Literacy drive ahead, IPPB, in collaboration with Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority under the aegis of Ministry of Corporate Affairs, launched the initiative called ‘Niveshak Didi’ to promote Financial Literacy “By the women, for the women” concept.

    • ‘Niveshak Didi’ initiative is based on the ideology of women for women as rural area women feel more comfortable to share their queries with a female itself.
    • Three representatives ‘Niveshak Didi’ from the Kashmir valley were given certificates during the IEPFA Conference in Srinagar, J&K.
    • The Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority (IEPFA) under the aegis of Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) organised an Investor Education, Awareness and Protection Conference in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir on 28 October 2022 at Kashmir International Conference.
Key Points:
    • As part of launch of ‘Niveshak Didi’ initiative, IPPB conducted India’s First Floating Financial Literacy Camp by a newly appointed ‘Niveshak Didi’.
    • The Floating Financial Literacy Camp was conducted among the local residents around the world-famous Dal Lake of Srinagar, J&K.
    • Since Shikara is part & parcel of their life, the gathering did take place on multiple Shikaras and the ‘Niveshak Didi’ held the Financial Literacy session in local Kashmiri language from Shikara itself, thus the whole session was conducted in the waters of Dal Lake.
    • The session covered topics ranging from banking and financial products, importance of joining the mainstream financial services offered by regulated entities & protection against various types of risks involved with investments and measures of fraud prevention.
About IPPB:
    • India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has been established under the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communication with 100% equity owned by the Government of India.
    • IPPB was launched by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on September 1, 2018.
    • The bank has been set up with the vision to build the most accessible, affordable and trusted bank for the common man in India.
    • The fundamental mandate of IPPB is to remove barriers for the unbanked and under-banked and reach the last mile leveraging a network comprising 160,000 post offices (145,000 in rural areas) and 400,000 postal employees.

IORA Seminar on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing

⇒ A Seminar on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, under the aegis of Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), was conducted by the Indian Navy at Goa on 02 November 2022.

The Seminar was conducted by the Indian Navy on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, under the guidance of the Ministry of External Affairs and duly supported by the Department of Fisheries, functioning under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and other agencies of the Govt of India.

Participation:

Representatives from 14 out of 23 IORA Member States (Bangladesh, Comoros, France, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Seychelles, Tanzania and Thailand) attended the Seminar.

Discussion:
    • During the Seminar, the attendees reviewed the scale of Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing activities in the IOR.
    • The attendees discussed the adverse effects of such developments on marine ecosystem, the legal voids in tackling these activities and deliberated upon collaborative strategies and capacity building measures that could be pursued by the IORA Member States towards mitigating the menace of IUU Fishing in IOR.
Background:
    • As the third largest ocean, the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) is a lifeline for nearly 35% of global population. Fish and Fisheries comprise important components of food security chain.
    • These also contribute significantly to national socio-economic development. Sustainable fishing is seriously compromised by IUU fishing activities and are therefore a major cause of concern for the littorals of IOR.
    • This was accordingly identified as an area of greater collaboration by the IORA Working Group on Maritime Safety and Security (WGMSS), established in September 2018.
    • The WGMSS is presently chaired by Sri Lanka, and is advancing the IORA Action Plan 2017-21, adopted by IORA Member States.

National Records created in Phase 2 of the Khelo India Women’s Weightlifting Tournament

⇒ Multiple National Records have been created in Phase 2 of the Khelo India Women’s Weightlifting tournament which ended on 02 November 2022 in Modinagar, Uttar Pradesh.

Highlights:
    • The tournament took place across the Senior, Junior and Youth age categories.
    • Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) bagged the Winners’ team trophy in the Senior Women category, while Maharashtra bagged the Winners’ team trophies in the Junior Women and Youth Girls category.
    • The National Records were created by Akanksha Vyavahare, Bhawana, Martina Devi, Yogita Khedkar and Kalpana Yadav.
    • The three best lifters in the tournament on the basis of points were the following: Komal Johar (Senior Women), Sanju Devi (Junior Women) and Akanksha Vyavahare (Youth Girls).

    • 40kg – Akanksha Vyavahare (Snatch: 60kg, C&J: 71kg, Total: 131kg);

The Phase 2 of the Khelo India Women’s Weightlifting tournament was organised by the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) and supported by the Department of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

» The total amount of support put forward by the Govt of India to conduct the Khelo India league across all editions is Rs 1.88 Crore, which includes a total cash prize of Rs 48.3 Lakh to the top 8 ranked weightlifters across 10 weight categories in all age groups.
