PM launches 511 Pramod Mahajan Grameen Kaushalya Vikas Kendras in Maharashtra

⇒ The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi launched 511 Pramod Mahajan Grameen Kaushalya Vikas Kendras in Maharashtra via video conferencing 19 October 2023.

About Grameen Kaushalya Vikas Kendras:
    • Established across 34 rural districts of Maharashtra, these Kendras will conduct skill development training programs across various sectors to provide employment opportunities to rural youth.
    • Each Kendra will train about 100 youngsters in at least two vocational courses.
    • The training will be provided by empanelled industry partners and agencies under the National Skill Development Council.
    • The establishment of these Kendras will help the region attain significant strides towards developing a more competent and skilled manpower.

Delivery of the 2nd MCA Barge, LSAM 8 (YARD 76)

⇒ Second MCA Barge of the series LSAM 8 (Yard 76) has been delivered to Indian Navy on 19 October 2023 in presence of Shri Puneet, INAS, Chief General Manager, NAD(Mbi).

Key Points:
    • Contract for construction and delivery of 08 x Missile Cum Ammunition (MCA) Barge was concluded with M/s SECON Engineering Projects Pvt Ltd, Visakhapatnam, a MSME, in consonance with “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives of the Government of India.
    • The Barge has been built under the classification rules of Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) with a service life of 30 years.
    • With all major and auxiliary equipment/ systems sourced from indigenous manufacturers, the Barge is proud flag bearer of “Make in India” initiatives of Ministry of Defence.

» Induction of MCA Barge will provide impetus to operational commitments of Indian Navy by facilitating Transportation, Embarkation and Disembarkation of articles / ammunition to Indian Naval Ships both alongside jetties and at outer harbours.

Sir JJ School of Art declared de novo Deemed University

⇒ Union Minister for Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Dharmendra Pradhan visited the 166-year-old Sir J J School of Art on 19 October 2023.

» On the occasion, he declared Sir JJ School of Art a de novo Deemed University and also unveiled the foundation stone of the new university.

Key Points:
    • The de novo category is awarded to institutions devoted to innovations in teaching and research in unique and emerging areas of knowledge.
    • With the Centre’s approval in place, the ‘Sir JJ School of Art, Architecture and Design’ will become Maharashtra’s only government-run deemed-to-be University and one among the handful institutes with the ‘de novo’ tag across the country.

The Golden Peacock Awards, established by the Institute of Directors (IOD), India in 1991, has emerged as an internationally acclaimed standard for corporate excellence.

Karthikeyan Murali wins against World No. 1, Magnus Carlsen at Qatar Masters 2023

⇒ India’s Karthikeyan Murali became just the third player from the country to defeat World number one Magnus Carlsen in classical chess.

    • The 24-year-old Indian managed to defeat Carlsen playing with black in the seventh round of the Qatar Masters tournament.
    • Murali’s win over Carlsen, made him the third Indian after Harikrishna, who defeated the Norwegian in 2005, and Viswanathan Anand, the only other player from the country to have defeated Carlsen.
Qatar Masters Open 2023:

» Qatar Masters Open 2023 was held from October 11-21, 2023.

Winners:
    • 19th-seed GM Nodirbek Yakubboev was the winner of the Qatar Masters 2023.
    • Nodirbek Abdusattorov took second place, while Indian GM S L Narayanan finished third.
