Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor

⇒ Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi on 13 December 2021. PM inaugurated Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor, constructed at a cost of around Rs.339 crore.

The Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor was constructed between Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Manikarnika Ghat along the Ganges River.

The Prime Minister noted that earlier the temple area was only 3000 square feet which has now enlarged to about 5 lakh square feet. Now 50000 – 75000 devotees can visit the temple and temple premises.

'10th Dr. Ida S. Scudder Humanitarian Oration' Award

⇒ Azim Premji, founder chairman of Wipro limited and founder of Azim Premji Foundation, has been honored with Dr. Ida S. Scudder Humanitarian Oration for the year 2021.

On the 10th anniversary of the Dr. Ida S. Scudder Humanitarian Oration, the award was presented to Mr. Premji in recognition of his contributions to the society through the foundation.

Established by:

Christian Medical College Vellore (CMC) and the U.S.-based Vellore CMC Foundation, partnered to establish the Dr. Ida S. Scudder Humanitarian Oration to perpetuate the legacy of Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder.

About Foundation:

Established in 2001, the Foundation has contributed immensely towards education, runs Azim Premji University in Bengaluru and also supports several not-for-profit organisations with financial grants.

About Dr. Ida S. Scudder:

Dr. Scudder who was born in Ranipet in 1870 dedicated her life to bringing modern healthcare and medical education to people of India.

Bharathi Memorial Centenary Award

⇒ In December 2021, Chief Minister MK Stalin handed over Bharathi Memorial Centenary Award to Tamil researchers Seeni Viswanathan and Ya Manikandan, who undertook research on the life and works of Tamil poet Subramania Bharathi.

    • The award includes a cheque for ₹3 lakh.

27th edition of The CII Partnership Summit

⇒ The 27th edition of The CII Partnership Summit was held virtually, in partnership with Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India from 13 -15 December, 2021.

The Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs & Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal addressed the Inaugural Session of the CII Partnership Summit 2021 on 13 December 2021.

Theme:

The theme of the CII Partnership Summit 2021 was “Partnering for Building a New World: Growth, Competitiveness, Sustainability, Technology”.

Addressing the Session, Shri Goyal said:
    • India, as it assumes presidency of the G20, will leverage global partnerships for collective solutions to global issues.
    • Shri Goyal called for Partnerships among countries for achieving Sustainable Growth.

» The event was expected to further the agenda of strengthening partnerships and shaping new economic collaborations between countries, as well as among businesses.

Supersonic Missile Assisted Torpedo System

⇒ Supersonic missile assisted torpedo system was successfully launched from Wheeler Island in Odisha on December 13, 2021.

This was a text book launch, where the entire trajectory was monitored by the electro optic telemetry system, various range radars, including the down range instrumentation and down range ships.

The missile carried a torpedo, parachute delivery system and release mechanisms.

About Supersonic missile assisted torpedo system:
    • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) developed the Supersonic Missile Assisted Torpedo System.
    • The system is a next generation missile-based standoff torpedo delivery system.
    • The system has been designed to enhance anti-submarine warfare capability far beyond the conventional range of the torpedo.
    • This canister-based missile system consists of advanced technologies viz two stage solid propulsion, electro-mechanical actuators and precision inertial navigation.

Armed Forces Flag Day

⇒ Since 1949, 7th December is observed as the Armed Forces Flag Day throughout the country.

The day is being observed to honour the martyrs and the men in uniform who valiantly fought and continue to fight on our borders to safeguard the country’s honour.

Death

Sarada Menon, India’s first woman psychiatrist

⇒ Sarada Menon, considered India’s first woman psychiatrist, passed away on 05 December 2021 in Chennai. She was 98.

She has been a recipient of several awards, including the Padma Bhushan in 1992 for her work in the field of mental health.

Born in Mangaluru, Menon graduated from the Madras Medical College and trained in psychiatry in Bengaluru’s NIMHANS. She became the first woman psychiatrist in the country when she began working in 1959 at what is now the Institute of Mental Health (previously government Kilpauk mental hospital) in Chennai.
