RDSO becomes First Institute to be declared SDO

⇒ RDSO (Research Design & Standards Organization) becomes the FIRST Institution to be declared SDO under one “One Nation One Standard” mission on BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards). Research Designs & Standards Organization (RDSO), Lucknow, is the sole R&D Wing of Ministry of Railways.

To attain “Nation One Standard” vision of Govt of India, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body, has launched a scheme which provides for “Recognition of SDO (Standard Developing Organization)”.

Aim:

Through this scheme, BIS aims at aggregating and integrating the existing capabilities and dedicated domain specific expertise available with various organizations in the country engaged in standards development in their specific sectors, and enable convergence of all standard development activities in the country resulting in “One National Standard for One Subject”.

National Award to 'Nammude Kozhikode' APP

⇒ Kozhikode District Administration’s mobile application ‘Nammude Kozhikode’ (Our Kozhikode) has bagged the first prize (golden award), in the ‘Digital Governance Mobile Challenge’. Director of National Informatics Centre Neetha Verma announced the awards at Delhi on 28 May 2021.

The ‘Digital Governance Mobile Challenge’ is a national competition for novel projects at district level. It is being implemented in association with the National Informatics Centre.

‘Nammude Kozhikode’ application provides the services of various -government departments directly to the public. It also provides information regarding the welfare schemes of the government.

2021 ATP Lyon Open

⇒ The 2021 ATP Lyon Open, Men’s tennis tournament was held in Lyon, France from 17 May to 23 May, 2021. It is also known as the Open Parc Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes Lyon. It was the fourth edition of the Lyon Open, and part of the ATP Tour 250 series.

World No Tobacco Day 2021

⇒ World No Tobacco Day is observed globally every year on 31 May.

Theme:

The theme of the World No Tobacco Day 2021 is “Commit to Quit”.

History of World No Tobacco Day:

The Member States of the World Health Organization created World No Tobacco Day in 1987. The aim was to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes.

World No Tobacco Day 2021 Awards:

Every year, World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes individuals or organizations in each of the six WHO Regions (AFRO, AMRO, EURO, WPRO, EMRO and SEAR) for their accomplishments in the area of tobacco control. This recognition takes the form of WHO Director-General Special Recognition Award and World No Tobacco Day Awards.

World No Tobacco Day 2021 Awards: (Indian Winners)

WHO Director-General Special award:

    • Dr Harsh Vardhan, Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Republic of India

In South-East Asia Region awardee:

Death

Last surviving former member of the Indian Constituent Assembly, T M Kalliannan Gounder

⇒ Gandhian freedom fighter, T M Kalliannan Gounder died at Thiruchengode in Tamil Nadu on 28 May 2021. He was 101.

Mr Gounder was the last surviving former member of the Indian Constituent Assembly. He was also served as a Member of Legislative Council in Tamil Nadu and also as and MLA. He was reportedly the youngest member in the Constituent Assembly then and also a member of India’s first provisional parliament.

A Gandhian, the freedom fighter joined the Indian National Congress and participated in the Quit India movement.
