National

5G Trials at Different Locations Across India

⇒ The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, approved, permissions to Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) for conducting trials for use and applications of 5G technology, on 04 May 2021.

TSP Companies:

Bharti Airtel Ltd., Reliance JioInfocomm Ltd., Vodafone Idea Ltd. and MTNL are the applicant TSPs.

These companies (TSPs) have tied-up with original equipment manufacturers and technology providers which includes Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and C-Dot. Apart from this, Reliance JioInfocomm Ltd will also be conducting trials using its own indigenous technology.

Experimental Spectrum Bands:

The experimental spectrum is being given in various bands which include:

    • Mid-band (3.2 GHz to 3.67 GHz)
    • Millimeter wave band (24.25 GHz to 28.5 GHz)
    • Sub-Gigahertz band (700 GHz)
  • TSPs will also be permitted to conduct 5G trials under their existing owned spectrum (800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2500 MHz).
Duration of Trial:

The duration of the trials is currently for 6 months.

Acting Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission

⇒ The President of India has authorised Justice (Retd) Prafulla Chandra Pant as the acting chairperson of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) with effect from April 25, 2021. Justice (Retd) P C Pant is also a member of the National Human Rights Commission.

Chief Minister of Union Territory Puducherry

⇒ All India N R Congress chief N Rangasamy was on 07 May 2021 sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Union Territory Puducherry for a record fourth time.

Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory Puducherry, Tamilisai Soundarajan administered the oath of office to AINRC chief N Rangasamy.

International

Governor’s Seminar as part of ADB’s annual meeting 2021

⇒ Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs and Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Governor for India Smt Nirmala Sitharaman on 03 May 2021 participated in the Governor’s Seminar on “Cooperation for a Resilient Future”. The Governor’s Seminar was held as part of ADB’s annual meeting 2021.

The countries Japan, Georgia, China, Philippines and Netherlands also participated in the Governor’s Seminar.

G20 Tourism Ministers' Meeting

⇒ Union Minister of State for Tourism & Culture (I/c) Shri Prahlad Singh Patel participated in G20 Tourism Ministers’ Meeting held in Italy on 4th May 2021.

Union Minister of State for Tourism & Culture supported the focus of the Italian G20 Presidency on recovery and ensuring new opportunities for People, Planet and Prosperity by putting in place Guidelines on the seven key interrelated policy areas.

Seven key interrelated policy areas are Safe mobility, Crisis management, Resilience, Inclusiveness, Green transformation, Digital transition and Investment.

Athlete Ambassadors for the IOC's 'Believe in Sport' Campaign

⇒ The Badminton World Federation on 03 May 2021 announced that India shuttler PV Sindhu and Canada’s Michelle Li have been nominated as athlete ambassadors for the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) ‘Believe in Sport’ campaign aimed at preventing competition manipulation.

The IOC’s ‘Believe in Sport’ campaign was launched in 2018. The campaign aims to raise awareness among athletes, coaches and officials of the threat of competition manipulation.

Both PV Sindhu and Michelle Li have also been global ambassadors for Badminton World Federation’s ‘i am badminton’ campaign since April 2020.

Death

Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Jagmohan

⇒ Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Jagmohan passed away on 03 may 2021. He was 93.

Mr Jagmohan was appointed as the governor of Jammu and Kashmir in 1984 for five years. He also served as the lieutenant governor of Delhi and Union minister.

He was conferred with the Padma Vibhushan award in 2016.

Former BCCI selector and Rajasthan captain Kishan Rungta

⇒ Former BCCI selector and Rajasthan captain Kishan Rungta died on 01 May 2021 in Jaipur. He was 88.

Mr Kishan played 59 first class games between 1953-1970 scoring 2717 runs. He also served as a national selector from Central Zone in 1998.
