National Teachers’ Award 2023

⇒ The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu conferred National Awards on teachers from across the country at a function held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on September 5, 2023 on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.

Award winners of National Teachers’ Award 2023:

» 75 selected awardees were honored with the National Teachers’ Award 2023. 50 School Teachers, 13 teachers from Higher education and 12 teachers from Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship were awarded.

From the year 2023, the ambit of National Teachers’ Award has been expanded to include teachers of Department of Higher Education and Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship.

About National Teachers’ Award:
    • Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education has been organising a National level function on Teachers Day every year to confer the National Awards to the best teachers of the country, selected through a rigorous, transparent selection process.
    • The purpose of National Teachers’ Award is to celebrate the unique contribution of teachers in the country and to honor those teachers who, through their commitment and dedication, have not only improved the quality of education but also enriched the lives of their students.
    • Each award carries a certificate of merit, a cash award of Rs 50,000 and a silver medal. The awardees would also get an opportunity to interact with Hon’ble Prime Minister.
National Teachers’ Day:

Every year, India celebrates 5th September, the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, as National Teachers’ Day.

Additional Director General of Military Nursing Service

⇒ Maj Gen Ignatius Delos Flora has taken charge as the Additional Director General of Military Nursing Service (MNS) on 01 September 2023.

About Maj Gen Ignatius Delos Flora:
    • The General Officer was commissioned into the MNS in the year 1985 and completed her Midwifery training at Command Hospital Air Force Bangalore in 1986.
    • During her illustrious career of 38 years, the General Officer has held various key appointments in the Armed Forces Medical Services hospitals including JDMNS (Trg & HS) Eastern Command, DPM INHS Asvini, Principal Matron AICTS Pune, Brig MNS at HQ Northern Command.

ASI’s “Adopt a Heritage 2.0 programme”, Indian Heritage App and e-Permission portal launched

⇒ The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has 3696 monuments under protection, which are spread, throughout the country. These monuments not only exhibit the rich cultural heritage of India but also play a significant role in fostering the economical growth. In order to sustain the rich cultural legacy, the heritage sites require time to time enhancement of the amenities.

“Adopt a Heritage 2.0” Programme:

» To this end and to further enhance the experience of visitors, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) launched “Adopt a Heritage 2.0” programme on 4th September 2023 at Samvet Auditorium, IGNCA, New Delhi.

    • Under this programme, ASI invites corporate stakeholders to enhance the amenities at the monuments by utilizing their CSR funds.
    • The programme is a revamped version of the earlier scheme launched in 2017 and clearly defines the amenities sought for different monuments as per AMASR Act 1958. The stakeholders can apply for adopting a monument or specific amenity/ amenities at a monument through a dedicated web portal with URL www.indianheritage.gov.in, which contains details of monuments sought for adoption along with gap analysis and financial estimation of amenities.
    • The ‘Adopt a Heritage 2.0’ programme seeks to foster collaboration with corporate stakeholders through which they can contribute in preserving these monuments for our upcoming generations.
    • The selected stakeholders will develop, provide and maintain amenities in hygiene, accessibility, safety and knowledge categories. In doing so, they will get an opportunity to be recognized as a responsible and heritage-friendly entity. The term of the appointment will be for a period of five years initially, which may be further extended up to five years.
Mobile app:

» Further, a user-friendly mobile app, named ‘Indian Heritage’ was also launched, which will showcase the heritage monuments of India.

    • The app will feature state-wise details of monuments along with photographs, list of public amenities available, geo-tagged location and feedback mechanism for citizens.
    • The launch will be in a phased manner, with the ticketed monuments launched in Phase I, followed by the remaining monuments.
e-Permission portal:

» An e-permission portal, with URL www.asipermissionportal.gov.in for obtaining permission for photography, filming and developmental projects on monuments was also launched.

    • The portal will fast-track the process for obtaining various permissions and solve operational and logistical bottlenecks involved.

International Cruise Terminal at Visakhapatnam Port

⇒ International Cruise Terminal at Visakhapatnam Port inaugurated in the presence of Minister of Tourism (State), Shri Shripad Naik, Minister of Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal along with several other distinguished dignitaries on 04 September 2023.

The International Cruise Terminal, now open for operations, serves as a pivotal gateway for both domestic and international cruise tourism along the eastern coast of India. This world-class facility promises to offer a transformative experience to tourists while fostering economic growth and benefiting local communities.

Key Points:
    • This visionary project was initiated in response to a proposal from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways.
    • The Ministry of Tourism approved part funding for the development of the Cruise-Cum Cargo Terminal at the channel berth in the outer harbour of Visakhapatnam Port by the Vishakhapatnam Port Trust under the Scheme of Assistance to Central Agencies for Tourism Infrastructure Development during the financial year 2018-19.
    • The total approved project cost, as provided by Vishakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT), amounted to ₹77 crores. Of this, the Ministry of Tourism committed 50 percent of funding, equivalent to ₹38.50 crores, with the remaining expenditure being met by Vishakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) from their internal resources.
    • The Cruise Terminal Building spans an area of 4,580.46 sq meters, encompassing both the ground floor and first floor.
    • The Cruise Terminal Building is equipped with essential facilities, including lounges, customs, immigration, quarantine counters, baggage handling facilities, scanning, concourse, restaurant, entertainment, shopping, health, and business exhibitions, money exchange outlets, CCTV, and ample parking space.

World Teachers’ Day 2023

⇒ World Teachers’ Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate all teachers around the globe.

Theme:

The theme for World Teachers’ Day 2023 was “The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage”.

It is a day to celebrate how teachers are transforming education but also to reflect on the support they need to fully deploy their talent and vocation, and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally.

History:
    • It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.
    • The Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 Recommendation by covering teaching personnel in higher education.
    • World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994.

» World Teachers’ Day is co-convened in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF and Education International (EI).
