Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022

The Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 or Birmingham 2022 was held in Birmingham from July 28 to August 08, 2022. The 2022 Commonwealth Games is officially known as the XXII Commonwealth Games.

Mascot:

The official mascot for the 2022 Commonwealth Games was Perry, a multi-coloured bull. Perry is named after an area of Birmingham, Perry Barr, within which Perry Park and the main athletics stadium, the Alexander Stadium, are located.

Top medal winning countries:
  • Australia topped the tally with 178 medals (67 gold, 57 silver, 54 bronze) followed by England who collected 173 medals (56 gold, 64 silver, 53 bronze).
  • Canada finished third with 26 gold, 32 silver and 34 bronze for a total of 92 medals.
  • India placed at the 4th spot with total 61 medals. India bagged 22 Gold, 16 Silver and 23 Bronze medals in various disciplines.

India at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022:

Participation:
  • A total of 215 athletes, participating in 141 events across 19 sporting disciplines, represented India at the CWG 2022. It was India’s 18th appearance at the Commonwealth Games.
India’s flagbearer:
  • Double Olympic medallist badminton ace PV Sindhu and Indian men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh were India’s flagbearer for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Games 2022 opening ceremony was held in Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
  • Table tennis player Achanta Sharath Kamal and boxer Nikhat Zareen were India’s flagbearers for the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 Birmingham closing ceremony.
Partners and Sponsors of Indian Contingents:
  • The Indian CWG squad had Adani Sportsline as the Principal Sponsor while JSW Inspire as the Principal & Kitting Sponsors.
  • Herbalife Official was the Nutrition Partner, Manyawar was the Ceremonial Kitting Partner & Adidas was the performance footwear partners.
  • INOX & Amul were Associate Sponsors, Borossil as Hydration Partners and SFA as Sports Ed-Tech Partner.

Indian medalists in Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022:

Gold:
  1. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won Gold medal by lifting a total of 201 KG in women’s 49 KG weightlifting event.
  2. Weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga, the 19-year-old from Mizoram, bagged Gold in the Men’s 67 kg category of weightlifting. Jeremy lifted a total of 300kg (140kg in Snatch + 160kg in C&J) at the Games, which is a CWG record.
  3. Weightlifter Achinta Sheuli clinched a Gold medal in the men’s 73 kg category. Achinta lifted a total of 313kg (snatch 143kg + clean and jerk 170kg) at the Games.
  4. Bajrang Puniya won his third consecutive Commonwealth Games medal. Bajrang Puniya clinched the Gold medal in Men’s Freestyle 65kg wrestling.
  5. Sakshi Malik won the Gold medal in Women’s Freestyle 62kg wrestling.
  6. Deepak Punia won gold medal in Men’s Freestyle 86kg wrestling.
  7. Sudhir won Gold Medal in para powerlifting men’s heavyweight event at Commonwealth Games 2022. The 27-year-old Sudhir, has an impairment due to the effects of policongratur’s win opened the India’s para sports medal account.
  8. Ravi Dahiya won Gold Medal in Men’s freestyle 57 Kg wrestling.
  9. Vinesh Phogat won Gold Medal in Women’s 53 Kg Wrestling. She created history by winning third consecutive gold in wrestling at CWG2022.
  10. Naveen Kumar won a Gold Medal in Men’s Freestyle 74 Kg wrestling.
  11. Bhavina Patel won Gold Medal in Para Table Tennis.
  12. Nitu Ghanghas won the Gold medal in 48 kg Women’s Boxing.
  13. Amit Panghal won the Gold medal in 51 kg Men’s Boxing.
  14. Eldhose Paul won Gold Medal in Athletics Men’s Triple Jump.
  15. Nikhat Zareen won the Gold medal in Women’s 50kg Boxing.
  16. Achanta Sharath Kamal won Gold Medal in Men’s Singles Table Tennis.
  17. Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won Gold Medal in Men’s Doubles Badminton.
  18. Lakshya Sen won the Gold medal in Men’s Singles Badminton.
  19. P V Sindhu won the Gold medal in Women’s Singles Badminton.
  20. Sharath Kamal and Sreeja Akula won Gold Medal in Mixed Doubles Table Tennis.
  21. Sathiyan, Harmeet Desai, Sharat Kamal and Sanil Shetty won the Gold medal in Table Tennis. The men’s table tennis team clinched gold medal after beating Singapore 3-1 in the final.
  22. Lovely Choubey, Pinki Singh, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey won Gold Medal in Lawn Bowls.
    • India’s Lawn Bowls women’s fours team made history by winning gold at the Commonwealth Games 2022. This is the country’s first medal in the lawn bowls event.
    • Team comprising of skipper Rupa Rani Tirkey, Lovely Choubey, Pinki and Nayanmoni Saikia beat South Africa 17-10 in the final of the Women’s Fours event.
Silver:
  1. Weightlifter Sanket Sargar bagged Silver (248 kg) in Men’s 55 kg weightlifting.
  2. Weightlifter Bindyarani Devi clinched a silver medal in the women’s 55kg at the Commonwealth Games. She lifted a total weight of 202kg (86kg+116kg).
  3. Weightlifter, Vikas Thakur won the silver medal in Men’s 96kg category, with a total lift of 346Kg (Snatch- 155kg, Clean & Jerk- 191kg) in the final. Vikas Thakur won his 3rd Consecutive medal at the Commonwealth Games.
  4. Judoka Shushila Devi Likmabam won the silver medal in the women’s 48kg category.
  5. Judo Player, Tulika Maan won Silver Medal in 78+ kg category.
  6. Anshu Malik won the Silver medal in Women’s Freestyle 57kg wrestling.
  7. M. Sreeshankar won Silver medal in Men’s long jump at the CWG 2022. It is after decades that India has won a medal in Men’s long jump at the CWG.
  8. Race walking champion, Priyanka Goswami won the Silver Medal in Women’s 10 km Race walk. Priyanka Goswami became the first Indian woman to win a medal in race walking.
  9. Avinash Sable won Silver Medal in the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase event.
  10. Sharath Kamal and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran won Silver Medal in Men’s Double Table Tennis.
  11. Abdulla Aboobacker won silver in Athletics Men’s Triple Jump event.
  12. Indian Men’s Hockey Team won Silver Medal.
  13. Sagar Ahlawat won Silver Medal in Men’s 92+ Kg in boxing.
  14. Indian Badminton Mixed Team won Silver medal in the Birmingham CWG 2022. Indian badminton mixed team suffered a 1-3 defeat against Malaysia and had to settle for silver.
  15. The Indian Women’s cricket team won Silver Medal in Women’s Team Cricket Women’s T-20 at CWG 2022. Being the first ever CWG medal in cricket, this one will always be special.
  16. Sunil Bahadur, Navneet Singh, Chandan Kumar Singh and Dinesh Kumar, the players of Lawn Bowl Men’s team won the Silver Medal.
Bronze:
  1. Weightlifter Poojary Gururaja won Bronze medal in Men’s 61kg weightlifting category.
  2. Judo star Vijay Kumar Yadav clinched bronze in the men 60 kg category.
  3. Weightlifter Harjinder Kaur won the bronze medal in the women’s 71kg event.
  4. Weightlifter Lovepreet Singh won bronze medal in the 109 kg category of men’s weightlifting with a total lift of 355 Kg.
  5. Weightlifter Gurdeep Singh won bronze medal in weightlifting men’s +109 kg category.
  6. Squash player, Saurav Ghosal won bronze medal in Squash men’s singles at CWG 2022.
  7. Saurav Ghosal and Dipika Pallikal won the Bronze Medal in Squash Mixed Doubles event.
  8. Tejaswin Shankar made athletics history by winning India’s first-ever medal, a bronze, in the high jump. Tejaswin Shankar’s Bronze in High Jump is also India’s first in Track and Field at Commonwealth Games, 2022.
  9. Divya Kakran won bronze medal in Women’s Freestyle 68kg wrestling.
  10. Mohit Grewal won bronze medal in Men’s Freestyle 125kg wrestling.
  11. Jaismine Lamboria won Bronze Medal in women’s 60 KG Boxing.
  12. Pooja Gehlot won Bronze Medal in Women’s 50 Kg Freestyle wrestling.
  13. Deepak Nehra won Bronze Medal in Men’s Freestyle 97 Kg wrestling.
  14. Pooja Sihag won Bronze Medal in Women’s 76 Kg Wrestling.
  15. Rohit Tokas won the Bronze Medal in Men’s 67 Kg Boxing.
  16. Boxer Mohammad Hussamuddin won Bronze medal in boxing in the Men’s 57kg event.
  17. Sonalben Manubhai Patel won the Bronze Medal in Para Table Tennis.
  18. Indian Women’s Hockey Team bagged the Bronze medal after defeating New Zealand.
  19. Sandeep Kumar won the Bronze medal in Men’s 10,000m Race Walk.
  20. Annu Rani won the Bronze medal in Women’s Javelin Throw.
  21. Table Tennis player, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran won the Bronze Medal in Men’s Singles Table Tennis.
  22. Srikanth Kidambi won the Bronze Medal in the Men’s singles Badminton match. This is his fourth CWG medal thus showing his skill and consistency.
  23. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand won the Bronze Medal in Badminton Doubles.
