Indian Forest and Wood Certification Scheme

⇒ The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has launched the Indian Forest & Wood Certification Scheme in December 2023.

Key Points:
    • This national forest certification scheme offers voluntary third-party certification designed to promote sustainable forest management and agroforestry in the country.
    • The scheme includes forest management certification, tree outside forest management certification, and chain of custody certification.
    • The Indian Forest and Wood Certification Scheme can provide market incentives to various entities that adhere to responsible forest management and agroforestry practices in their operations. This includes state forest departments, individual farmers, or Farmer Producer Organizations engaged in agroforestry and farm forestry, as well as other wood-based industries in the value chain.
Forest Management Certification is Based on:
    • The Forest Management certification is based on the Indian Forest Management Standard, consisting of 8 criteria, 69 indicators and 254 verifiers, which is an integral part of the National Working Plan Code 2023.
    • A separate Trees Outside Forests Standard, is now introduced as a part of the newly launched Indian Forest & Wood Certification Scheme.
Advisory Body:

The Indian Forest and Wood Certification Scheme, will be overseen by the Indian Forest and Wood Certification Council, which will act as a multistakeholder advisory body.

    • The Council is represented by members from eminent institutions such as Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, Forest Survey of India, Quality Council of India, Indian Institute of Forest Management including representatives from the Ministries of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Ministry of Commerce and Industry, State Forest Departments, Forest Development Corporations, and representatives from wood-based industries.
Operating Agency:

Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal will act as the scheme operating agency and will be responsible for overall management of the Indian Forest and Wood Certification Scheme.

Accreditation the Certification Bodies:

The National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies under the Quality Council of India will accredit the certification bodies which will carry out independent audits and assess adherence of various entities on the standards prescribed under the scheme.

National Working Plan Code 2023:

“National Working Plan Code-2023” for scientific management of forests and evolving new approaches was released on the occasion of the ‘World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought’ on 17 June 2023.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 17 June to be “World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought” by its resolution A/RES/49/115 adopted in December 1994. The theme of the International Day Against Desertification, and Drought 2023 was “Her land. Her rights”.

    • The National Working Plan Code-2023 acts as a guiding principle for State Forest Departments in preparation for the working plan for different forest divisions in the country.
    • National Working Plan Code-2023 deals in detail with the essentials of forest management planning, incorporating the principles of sustainable management of forests.
    • This includes extent and condition of forest and tree cover; maintenance, conservation and enhancement of biodiversity including wildlife, forest health and vitality, conservation and management of soil and water resources, enhancement of forest resource productivity, maintenance and enhancement of social, economic, cultural and spiritual benefits, and providing the appropriate policy, legal and institutional framework.

Winners of National Energy Conservation Awards 2023, National Energy Efficiency Innovation Awards 2023 and National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation 2023

⇒ The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu felicitated the winners of the National Energy Conservation Awards 2023, National Energy Efficiency Innovation Awards 2023 and National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation 2023 on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day on December 14, 2023, in New Delhi.

National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA) 2023

» The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under Ministry of Power, is mandated as per the Energy Conservation Act 2001, to regulate and promote energy efficiency and its conservation in India.

» To raise awareness about energy efficiency and its conservation, the BEE, under the guidance of Ministry of Power, recognizes and encourages endeavours of industrial units, institutions, and establishments in reducing energy consumption by felicitating them with Energy Conservation Awards on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day.

» A total of 63 prizes comprising 20 first prizes, 16 second prizes and 27 Certificates of Merit were awarded under NECA 2023.

National Energy Efficiency Innovation Awards (NEEIA) 2023:

» To recognize outstanding work and innovative minds of India in the area of Energy Efficiency, NEEIA was started in the year 2021.

» Applications for NEEIA 2023 were invited online, in various categories viz.-

    • Category A: Industries, Building and Transport
    • Category B: Students and Research Scholars

» The awards are evaluated based on Replicability, Affordability, Reliability, Impact on Energy Savings and Impact on Environment & Sustainability.

» A total of 8 prizes comprising 1 first prize, 1 second prize and 6 Certificates of Recognition were awarded under NEEIA 2023.

National Painting Competition 2023

» To continually bring change in the society towards conservation and efficient use of energy, the Ministry of Power is organizing National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation since 2005.

    • The competition is held in three stages, namely, School, State and National Levels.
    • The Painting Competition is being organized for students of 5th, 6th and 7th Standards under Group ‘A’ and of 8th, 9th and 10th standards under Group ‘B’.

4th India and Vietnam Joint Military Exercise VINBAX-2023

⇒ The fourth edition of Joint Military Exercise VINBAX between India and Vietnam was conducted at Hanoi, Vietnam from 11th to 21st December 2023.

Participation in VINBAX 2023:
    • The Indian Armed Forces contingent comprised 45 personnel. The Indian contingent comprised 39 personnel from an Engineer Regiment of Bengal Engineer Group and six personnel of Army Medical Corps.
    • The Vietnam People’s Army contingent also represented by 45 personnel.
Aim:

The aim of the exercise was to foster collaborative partnership, promote inter- operability and share best practices between the two sides under Chapter VII of United Nations Charter on Peace Keeping Operations.

Focus:

The exercise was conducted as a Command Post Exercise cum Field Training Exercise with focus on deployment and employment of an Engineer Company and a Medical Team.

About Exercise:

» The joint exercise encouraged exchange of ideas and both contingents jointly rehearsed tactics, technique and procedures.

    • Ideas were exchanged on modern methods to construct roads, culverts, helipads, ammunition shelter and observation posts in operational areas.
    • In addition, rehearsals were carried out for drills related to combat engineering and combat medical tasks.
Validation Exercise:

The Exercise culminated with a Validation Exercise, wherein standards attained by both contingents showcased. Both sides conducted technical military operations in accordance with scenarios akin to worldwide deployment of United Nations’ contingents.

» The joint exercise helped in promoting understanding and interoperability between the two contingents and further strengthened the defence cooperation between the friendly armies.

Prior Edition:
    • Exercise VINBAX was instituted in 2018 and the first edition was conducted at Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. It is an annual training event conducted alternatively in India and Vietnam.
    • The last edition was conducted in August 2022 at Chandimandir Military Station in Panchkula district of Haryana.

National Energy Conservation Day 2023

⇒ National Energy Conservation Day is celebrated every year on 14 December in India.

National Energy Conservation Day is celebrated to spread the message on the importance of conserving energy and to showcase the achievements of the nation in energy efficiency and conservation.

History:
    • The National Energy Conservation Day is organized by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under Ministry of Power, Government of India.
    • In 1991, the Ministry of Power started a scheme to recognise through awards the contribution of industries and establishments for making special efforts to reduce energy consumption while maintaining their production.
    • On December 14, 1991, the National Energy Conservation Awards were given to the winners for the first time.
    • Since then, the day has been marked as the National Energy Conservation Day.
