16th Chief Minister of Punjab

⇒ Congress’ Charanjit Singh Channi took oath as the 16th Chief Minister of Punjab on 20 September 2021.

The 58-year-old Congress leader was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Banwarilal Purohit at a simple ceremony.

IAPT - Dinabandhu Sahu Memorial Award 2021

⇒ Dr. Pius Augustine has won the IAPT Dinabandhu Sahu Memorial Award 2021 for his contribution to teaching, to student research and to the cause of physics education.

Dr. Augustine is a faculty member of the Department of Physics at Sacred Heart College, Thevara, Kochi, Kerala.

About Award:

IAPT – Dinabandhu Sahu Memorial Award has been instituted by Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) with the corpus fund provided by Prof Sarmistha Sahu in memory of her father Late Dinabandhu Sahu of Cuttack.

This award recognizes a Physics Teacher for his/her significant contribution to Undergraduate Physics Teaching in any UGC recognized Institution in India.

The Award consisting of a cash prize and a Citation is presented every year during the Annual Convention of IAPT.

Institution of Engineers (India) - M P Baya National Award 2020

⇒ APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex, DRDO, Advanced Systems Laboratory’s project director N Kishore Nath has been conferred with the prestigious Institution of Engineers (India) – M P Baya National Award 2020.

The award has been conferred in recognition of his significant R&D contributions and technological advancements in mechanical engineering.

The award was conferred as part of Engineers’ Day celebrations at IEI, Udaipur, Rajasthan.

About Dr. Nath:

Dr. Nath is widely known for his contributions in design and development of Agni missile systems and advanced technologies for numerous defence and aerospace applications in India.

CMD of RINL

⇒ Recently, the government has appointed Atul Bhatt as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of disinvestment-bound steel company Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL).

RINL is a special steel-making player based in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

Dwarf Container Train Service

⇒ Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, virtually flagged-off the dwarf container train service from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) on 20 September 2021. With this, the first consignment of laden Dwarf containers from Dwarf container depot at the port was moved by train to ICD Kanpur.

About ‘Dwarf’ containers:

The ‘Dwarf’ containers provide a 67% increase in volume when double-stacked and can carry a weight of 71 tons, against 40 tons by an ISO container.

The ‘Dwarf Containers’ are lesser in height by 660 mm than normal ISO containers, giving them a logistical edge. The Low height of dwarf container loaded on trailers can pass through rural, semi urban and urban roads, through limited height subways & level crossing in electrified sections.

6th Edition of SCO Exercise Peaceful Mission: 2021

⇒ The 6th edition of Exercise PEACEFUL MISSION was hosted by Russia from 13 to 25 September 2021.

The 6th Edition of SCO Exercise Peaceful Mission: 2021 hosted by Russia started at Orenburg Region of South West Russia on 20 September 2021.

Indian military contingent:

An Indian military contingent comprising of an all arms combined force of 200 personnel from Indian Army and Indian Air force participated in the exercise. The Indian contingent was inducted to the exercise area by two IL-76 aircrafts.

Peaceful Mission Exercise:

Exercise Peaceful Mission: 2021 was based on joint counter terrorism operations at operational and tactical level in an urban environment in which Armies and Air Forces of all SCO member states participated.

The exercise enabled sharing of best practices between the Armed Forces of SCO nations.

The scope of the exercise included professional interaction, mutual understanding of drills & procedures, establishment of joint command & control structures and elimination of terrorist threats.

The twelve days long joint training, PEACEFUL MISSION culminated on 24 September 2021.

About PEACEFUL MISSION:

Joint Counter Terrorism Exercise PEACEFUL MISSION is a Multilateral Exercise, which is conducted biennially as part of military diplomacy between Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states.

Aim:

The aim of the exercise is to foster close relations between SCO Member States and to enhance abilities of the military leaders to command multinational military contingents.

Award at the 23rd Porto Cartoon World Festival

⇒ Noted Telugu political cartoonist Pamarthy Shankar has been conferred international recognition by winning prizes at the 23rd Porto Cartoon World Festival for his caricatures on Martin Luther King and Maria João Pires.

The festival was organised by the Portuguese Printing Press Museum on the theme ‘Health’.

Shankar has won first prize in the competition on Martin Luther King and second prize in the ‘CatoMaria João Pires Special Caricature Award.’

Other Award:

Mr. Shanakar, in 2014, won the Grand Prix World Press Cartoon Award (Portugal), which is considered the Oscar of the Cartoon and Caricature World.

Five-member All-India Junior Selection Committee

⇒ Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the appointment of the five-member All-India Junior Selection Committee with former Tamil Nadu batsman Sridharan Sharath as its chairman.

The other four members of the committee are:

former Gujarat wicketkeeper-batsman Pathik Patel (West Zone), former Bengal medium-pacer Ranadeb Bose (East Zone), former Punjab batsman Krishan Mohan (North Zone) and former Madhya Pradesh pacer Harvinder Singh Sodhi (Central Zone)

Death

Akhara Parishad's President, Shri Narendra Giri

⇒ Akhara Parishad’s President, Shri Narendra Giri died at Baghambari math in Prayagraj on 20 September 2021.

Giri first took over as chief of the Akhara Parishad in 2016. In 2019, Giri was elected chief of the Parishad for a second time.
