International Mother Language Day or Matribhasha Diwas is observed every year on February 21 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism around the world.
The idea to celebrate International Mother Language Day was the initiative of Bangladesh. It was approved at the 1999 UNESCO General Conference and has been observed throughout the world since 2000.
UNESCO’s Theme for International Mother Language Day 2021:
The theme of the 2021 International Mother Language Day was “Fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society.”
It recognizes that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion, and the Sustainable Development Goals’ focus on leaving no one behind.
Vice President of India celebrated International Mother Language Day:
Vice President Shri Venkaiah Naidu celebrated International Mother Language Day in a unique way.
During this time, the Vice President tweeted in 22 Indian languages and English and also wrote articles in 24 vernacular newspapers of the country on the importance of promoting mother languages.
He posted the tweets in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Gujarati, Kashmiri, Konkani, Marathi, Odia, Urdu, Malayalam, Kannada, Odia, Punjabi, Nepali, Assamese, Bengali, Manipuri, Bodo, Santhali, Maithli, Dogri and Sanskrit.
