SAI-Railways NCOE in Coochbehar, West Bengal

⇒ The Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports and Information and Broadcasting, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur joined the Bhoomi Pujan of the first National Centre of Excellence being set up with the joint partnership of the Sports Authority of India and the Indian Railways, on 15 January 2023.

Key Points:
    • The SAI Railways NCOE is unique because this is the first-ever NCOE for which SAI has partnered with another organisation to build a National Centre of Excellence.
    • The Indian railways has given 19.5 acres of land in which the world class center will be set up with several facilities, including, a 400 meters synthetic track of international standard, a football ground, a multi-purpose hall for indoor games and a 100 bedded hostel.
    • The indoor facilities will have major games such as boxing, judo, wrestling, volleyball, badminton, basketball and others. An international standard hockey synthetic turf is also planned.
About NCOE:
    • It has been the endeavour of the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to ensure the availability of top-class training infrastructure across the country to train athletes for Olympics and such international events through Sports Authority of India’s National Centers of Excellence.
    • The 23 NCOEs across the country imparts specialised training and playing facilities to elite and development level athletes in 14 priority and high priority disciplines. It provides sports science backup, individual diet prescribed by trained nutritionists and overall supervision of top-class coaches, qualified support staff and high-performance directors.

Fit India's Healthy Hindustan Talk Series

⇒ Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, on 15 January 2023 launched Fit India’s Healthy Hindustan Talk Series with a special episode on Millet.

During the special curtain raiser episode, the Minister had a special session with the Fit India Healthy Hindustan Icons, where he discussed fitness, a healthy diet chart, the needs of senior citizens and a special session on the importance of Millets in our daily life.

About Fit India’s Healthy Hindustan Talk Series:
    • The series, an online talk show by eminent fitness experts and Fit India Icons was conducted from January 22 to March 12, 2023.
    • In keeping with the vision of Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to create a fit nation, the aim of the Fit India Healthy Hindustan was to promote the importance of fitness, healthy eating and mental wellness among all age groups, especially senior citizens.
    • The Fit India Healthy Hindustan panellists included Luke Coutinho (Lifestyle Expert), Ryan Fernando (Sports Nutritionist), Heena Bhimani (Nutritionist) and Sangram Singh (Wrestler/Motivational Speaker).
About IYOM 2023:
    • The United Nations General Assembly has declared the year 2023 as the ‘International Year of Millets’ (IYOM). It is the initiative of the Government of India that has led to a United Nations Resolution being adopted with support from more than 70 nations across the globe.
    • The Government of India endeavours to celebrate IYOM 2023, to make it a people’s movement so that Indian millets, recipes, and value-added products are accepted globally.

56th Statesman Vintage & Classic Car Rally

⇒ John Morris Fire Engine, one of the priceless possessions of Indian Railways maintained at the National Rail Museum New Delhi, participated in the 56th Statesman Vintage & Classic Car Rally.

    • The 56th Statesman Vintage & Classic Car Rally was flagged off from Statesman House, New Delhi. The John Morris Fire engine led the rally.

The Statesman and VCCI organized the 56th Statesman Vintage & Classic Car Rally on January 15, 2023 at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

    • The Statesman has been organising the vintage car rally since 1964 in Delhi.
Statesman Challenge Trophy:

This year, the John Morris Fire Engine won the Statesman Challenge Trophy at the Vintage Car display.

About John Morris Fire Engine:
    • John Morris Fire Engine, manufactured in 1914, was acquired by the Nizam of Hyderabad for the Nizam State Railway for dousing fires.
    • It was maintained in the Loco & Carriage workshops at Lallaguda, Hyderabad and got retired in 1960.
    • Currently, it is one of the star exhibits at National Rail Museum, New Delhi.
    • It is the only vehicle in the world fitted with the original Shrewsbury and Challenger Solid Tyres and still retains all the original parts of its fire equipment.

PM shares snippets titled 'Your Exam, Your Methods-Choose Your Own Style' from Exam Warriors

⇒ The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi shared snippets titled ‘Your Exam, Your Methods-Choose Your Own Style’ from Exam Warriors book on 16 January 2023. He urged students to share how they prepare for exams.

    • Governor P. S. Sreedharan Pillai along with Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Tourism Shripad Naik released the book ‘Exam Warriors’ on 19 January 2023.
    • The book was released on the sidelines of the 6th edition of Prime Minister’s ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’. ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’ was organized on 27 January 2023.
About Exam Warriors:
    • The book ‘Exam Warriors’ is written by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and published in 2018.
    • Exam Warriors is written for young students to help them deal with exam stress.
    • This book is available in 13 languages such as Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Odia, Assamese, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Urdu and Bengali.
    • Exam warriors was translated in Tamil as Paridsaikub Payaman by V. Insuvai. Exam warriors is also translated into Kannada by Sahitya Panchanan P. K. Narayana Pillai, Hubballi.
    • It is also published in a Braille version which was launched by Narendra Modi on World Braille Day.

World Braille Day 2023

⇒ World Braille Day is celebrated every year on 4 January since 2019.

World Braille Day is observed to raise awareness of the importance of Braille as a means of communication in the full realization of the human rights for blind and partially sighted people.

History:
    • World Braille Day was formed in 2019 by the United Nations General Assembly.
    • World Braille Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille system, who was born on January 4, 1809.
    • The Braille language is a tactical method of representing alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots.
    • The method even helps visually impaired people to identify not only letters and numbers but also musical notes, scientific and mathematical symbols through the sense of touch.
    • Braille is essential in the context of education, freedom of expression and opinion, as well as social inclusion, as reflected in article 2 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
