India’s first International Bullion Exchange in GIFT-IFSC

⇒ The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi visited Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), India’s maiden International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), on July 29, 2022.

    • International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) is the unified regulator for the development and regulation of financial products, financial services and financial institutions in International Financial Services Centres (IFSCs) in India.
Activities:
    1. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the headquarters building of the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) in GIFT City, Gandhinagar.
    2. He also launched the India International Bullion Exchange (IIBX), India’s first International Bullion Exchange in GIFT-IFSC.
    3. He also launched the NSE IFSC-SGX Connect.
About GIFT city, IFSCA:
    • GIFT city (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) was envisaged as an integrated hub for financial and technology services not just for India but for the world.
    • The headquarters building of IFSCA has been conceptualised as an iconic structure, reflective of the growing prominence and stature of GIFT-IFSC as a leading International Financial Centre.
About IIBX:
    • IIBX will facilitate efficient price discovery with the assurance of responsible sourcing and quality, apart from giving impetus to the financialisation of gold in India.
    • It will empower India to gain its rightful place in the global bullion market and serve the global value chain with integrity and quality.
    • IIBX also re-enforces the commitment of the Government of India towards enabling India to be able to influence global bullion prices as a principal consumer.
About NSE IFSC-SGX Connect:
    • NSE IFSC-SGX Connect is a framework between NSE’s subsidiary in the GIFT International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) and Singapore Exchange Limited (SGX).
    • Under Connect, all orders on NIFTY derivatives placed by members of Singapore Exchange will be routed to and matched on the NSE-IFSC order matching and trading platform.
    • Broker-Dealers from India and across international jurisdictions are expected to participate in large numbers for trading derivatives through Connect. 
    • It will deepen liquidity in derivative markets at GIFT-IFSC, bringing in more international participants and creating a positive impact on the financial ecosystem in the GIFT-IFSC.

J C Daniel Award 2021

⇒ Veteran filmmaker K P Kumaran bagged the J C Daniel Award 2021, the Kerala government’s highest honour for lifetime contributions to Malayalam cinema.

    • Kumaran was selected for the award by a jury led by playback singer P Jayachandran. “Kumaran presented a new language and new sensibility to Malayalam parallel cinema in his illustrious career spanning 50 years,” the jury observed.
About Award:
    • The award is the highest recognition in the field of cinema, instituted by Kerala government.
    • It is presented annually by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, a non-profit institution under the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Government of Kerala, India.
    • Instituted in 1992, the award is given to honour the recipients for their “outstanding contributions to Malayalam cinema”.
    • The annual honour was named after J C Daniel, who made the first silent movie in Mollywood. Indian filmmaker J. C. Daniel is often regarded as the “father of Malayalam cinema”.
    • The award comprises a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, a citation and a plaque.

Dr. C. Narayana Reddy National Literary Award

⇒ The Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu presented the Dr. C. Narayana Reddy National Literary Award to eminent Odia writer, Dr. Pratibha Ray in Hyderabad on 29 July 2022.

    • A prolific writer in Odia language, Dr. Ray’s novels and short stories are widely acclaimed and touch upon important social issues.
    • She was the recipient of the Jnanpith Award in 2011, Padma Shri in 2007 and the Padma Bhushan in 2022.

2022 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting championship, Uzbekistan

⇒ The 2022 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from July 15-25, 2022.

Performance of India:

» The Indian contingent consisted of 11 athletes, 4 coaches, and support staff.

Gold:

Fast-rising Indian lifter Harshada Garud won the women’s 45kg gold at the 2022 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The 18-year-old claimed the yellow metal with an aggregate of 157kg (69kg+88kg) on 18 July 2022.

Bronze:

Soumya Dalvi bagged the bronze in the 45kg youth event. The youth world championship bronze medallist heaved 145kg (63kg+82kg) to make the podium.

In the men’s 49 kg youth event, L Dhanush won the bronze in the snatch section with an 85 kg effort.

» Medals are awarded separately for snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift in continental and World Championships. But, just one medal – for total lift – is awarded in the Olympics.

About Championship:
    • The Asian Weightlifting Federation organizes the Asian Weightlifting Championships, a weightlifting championship for competitors from Asian countries.
    • It was first held in 1969 for men and 1988 for women.
    • In 1982, the Championship was held in New Delhi, India.

2022 Asian Games Rescheduled

⇒ The 2022 Asian Games were originally scheduled for September this year, but organisers postponed them in May as China tried to stamp out a large Covid resurgence in several parts of the country.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) said:

2022 Asian Games will now be held in Hangzhou from September 23 to October 8, 2023.

Key Points:
    • China will host the 2022 Asian Games in autumn 2023.
    • This game will be the 19th edition of the Asian Games.
    • Hangzhou will be the third city in China to host the continental competition after Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010.
    • Some events are also expected to be held in other provincial cities including Ningbo, Wenzhou, Huzhou, Shaoxing and Jinhua.

International Tiger Day 2022

⇒ International Tiger Day is observed every year on 29 July all over the world.

The objective of the day is to raise awareness among individuals, organisations, and governments about the importance of the conservation of tigers, which have been declared an endangered species in many parts of the world.

    • Also known as Global Tiger Day, the special day holds immense significance, as over the last 150 years the world has witnessed a massive drop in the tiger population.
Theme:

The theme for International Tiger Day 2022 was ‘India launches Project Tiger to revive the tiger population’.

» India has 52 tiger reserves covering over 75,000 sq. km. Innovative measures are being undertaken to involve local communities in tiger protection.

    • The current wild cat population is 3,900, according to the WWF. India is home to nearly 70% of the world’s tiger population.
History:
    • Global Tiger Day was first proposed at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia in 2010.
    • The declaration to celebrate Global Tiger Day was taken on 29th July 2010 at St Petersberg in order to bring all tiger range countries together for increased thrust on tiger conservation and management globally. Since then, this day is symbolically celebrated as Global Tiger Day.
    • International Tiger Day is observed by many international organisations, including the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and the Smithsonian Institution.
