The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index 2020 Report

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index 2020 report titled “Democracy in sickness and in health?” released.

The EIU Democracy Index provides report of the state of world democracy for 165 independent states and two territories.

The Democracy Index is based on five categories: electoral process and pluralism, civil liberties, the functioning of government, political participation, and political culture. Based on their scores on 60 indicators within these categories, each country is then itself classified as one of four types of regime: full democracy, flawed democracy, hybrid regime or authoritarian regime.

Out of 167 countries, the Democracy Index 2020 classifies 23 countries as full democracies, 52 as flawed democracies, 35 as hybrid regimes and 57 as authoritarian regimes.

About Rank of India:

In the Democracy Index 2020 global ranking, India with an overall score of 6.61 in the Index got the 53rd rank out of 167 countries. India has been classified as a ‘flawed democracy’.

India was ranked 51st in the Democracy Index 2019.
