World Environment Day is an annual event celebrated across the Globe on 5 June to create awareness on Environmental issues.
It was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972, to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on Humans interfering with the Environment.
UN's Theme for World Environment Day 2021:
The World Environment Day 2021 was celebrated on the theme of ‘Ecosystem Restoration’. “Reimagine. Recreate.Restore.” were the keywords for the celebrations this year.
Ecosystem restoration means preventing, halting and reversing this damage – to go from exploiting nature to healing it.
Host Country for the World Environment Day Celebration:
Pakistan acted as global host of the World Environment day 2021.
UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration
This World Environment Day launch the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030, a global mission to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands, from the top of mountains to the depth of the sea.
This decade aims to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean.

PM in WED event:
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi participated in the World Environment Day event on 5th June 2021. The event was jointly organized by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
The theme for this year’s event is ‘promotion of biofuels for better environment’.
During the event, Prime Minister released the “Report of the Expert Committee on Road Map for ethanol blending in India 2020-2025”.
Green Room Air Conditioners Launched
On the occasion of World Environment Day, a new product category of Green Room Air Conditioners was launched on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM). The Secretary, Department of Commerce, Shri Anup Wadhavan launched it. The launch event was organized in association with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Films Division presented Oasis of Hope
To mark the important occasion of World Environment Day, Films Division presented Oasis of Hope, an online festival of films on environment on 5th and 6th June, 2021.
The films in the special ‘green package’ were – The Jungle Man Loiya, Living the Natural Way, Climate Change etc.
