11th Edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021 Released

11th Edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021 was released on 4th March 2021. Union Education Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ on 4 March 2021 addressed at the unveiling of ‘QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021’. 

'QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021' for Indian Universities:

In the QS Subject Rankings for the year 2021, 12 Indian Institutions secured position in top 100 of the world.

These 12 Indian institutions are: IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IISC Bangalore, IIT Guwahati,, IIM Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad, JNU, Anna University, University of Delhi, and O.P Jindal University.

In the ranking list,

  • IIT Madras has been ranked 30th in the world for Petroleum Engineering.
  • IIT Bombay has been ranked 41st and IIT Kharagpur has been ranked 44th in the world, for Minerals and Mining Engineering.
  • University of Delhi has been ranked 50th in the world for Development Studies.
‘QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021’ covered 51 narrow subjects and five broad faculty areas. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021, details for the top five institutions in the subject area of Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Computer Science and Information Systems, Medicine and Nursing given below.
  • For Arts and Humanities, the University of Oxford leads in the list, followed by Harvard University in second place, & University of Cambridge in third place.
  • In Engineering and Technology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) topped in the list, followed by Stanford University in the second spot.
  • MIT and Stanford topped the list for Computer Science and Information Systems.
  • In the Medicine, Harvard University retains its top spot from last year.
  • In the Nursing, University of Pennsylvania placed at first.

QS World University Rankings 2021:

Top five Universities listed in QS World University Rankings 2021 are:
  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  2. Stanford University
  3. Harvard University
  4. California Institute of Technology (Caltech)
  5. University of Oxford
Indian University listed in QS World University Rankings 2021 in top 500:
  • Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (172nd)
  • Indian Institute of Science (185th)
  • Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (193rd)
  • Indian Institute of Technology Madras (275th)
  • Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (314th)
  • Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (350th)
  • Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (383rd)
  • Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (470th)
For QS World University Rankings 2021, universities have been evaluated according to the following six metrics (Indicators):
  1. Academic Reputation
  2. Employer Reputation
  3. Faculty/Student Ratio
  4. Citations per faculty
  5. International Faculty Ratio
  6. International Student Ratio
