TIFF 2020 Award:
  • Anthony Hopkins, Chloe Zhao and Mira Nair will be honored with at the TIFF Tribute Awards ceremony. 
  • 45th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival will be held in 10 Sep to 19 Sep 2020.
  • Veteran actor Anthony Hopkins (an Oscar winner) will receive a TIFF Tribute Actor Award.
  • Director Chloe Zhao will receive the TIFF Ebert Director Award.
  • Mira Nair director of “Monsoon Wedding” and “The Namesake”, will be honoured with the Jeff Skoll Award in Impact Media.
Death:
  • Congress leader Rajiv Tyagi died on 12 Aug 2020 due to cardiac arrest in Ghaziabad. He was 52. He was party’s general secretary and spokesperson for its Uttar Pradesh unit.
  • Malayalam poet and film and drama lyricist Chunnakara Ramankutty passed away in Thiruvananthapuram on 13 Aug 2020. He was 84.
Bengaluru International Short Film Festival 2020:
  • Bengaluru International Short Film Festival 2020 is all set go from today i.e. August 13 – August 16. This year the festival is going online because of COVID-19. 
  • Bengaluru International Short Film Festival 2020 has also included a new category called “Let’s Include“. 
  • Aim of this category is to fight stigmas by promoting diverse and authentic portrayals of people with functional diversity.
Research:
  • IIT Ropar Researchers in collaboration with Momentum India Pvt Ltd has developed a unique UVGI based Room Disinfection Device
  • The device harnesses the germicidal effects of UV-C radiations to inactivate viruses and bacteria. While the “State of the Art” design of UV Safe ensures Zero-shadow 360° disinfection through its Prismatic Body and foldable wings. 
  • Device is designed by at IIT Ropar by Khushboo Rakha, Assistant Professor, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and Naresh Rakha, Senior Scientific Officer with technical support from Shahriar Reza (Design Consultant). 
  • Device will show focus on the most frequently touched surfaces, such as door knobs, table tops, cupboards, wall corners, work tops, furniture tops etc.
Others:
  • Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2020 would be held in November this year as per schedule i.e. between November 20 and 28. The festival is organised by the Directorate of Film Festivals in association with the state government’s Entertainment Society of Goa.
  • Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s life story is set to be turned into a 24-page comic book. Book will be released on 16 September. “TidalWave Productions” will bring out the book  “Political Power: Justin Trudeau” as a part of novel series “Political Power”.
  • Google introduced a new virtual education tool for teachers, students – “Assignments“. This is an app for educators to distribute, analyse and grade student work, and will be part of the learning management system.
  • Google has started its “Anywhere school 2020 event“. As part of the same, the company has introduced over 50 Classroom and Meet features. The remote learning updates aim to help students and teachers.
